As the title says - what would you change/add to make Dragon Age 2 as good as Origins? Other than adding more time than 18 months - but that's pretty much a given.

For example, I'd add in more companion conversations and being able to talk to your companions whenever. Also, more quests that referenced Hawke being a mage/Bethany being a mage. Why does nobody notice Hawke's throwing fire and stuff? (I tend to give my Hawkes less obvious spells, like Creation, but then again that's just me.)

Also, more insight into how the templars and mages act/react to Hawke's decisions. And a more concrete reason to support Meredith (while she's right, the majority of mages we see do seem to be blood mages/abominations, if she'd been more sympathetic? I may be using the wrong word, though.) Maybe more quests revolving around the templars and mages in Act 2 and Act 3 would've been nice. Especially showing how templars interact with a mage Hawke who's working with them and on their side. Same with the mages reacting to a non-mage who's sympathetic to their cause. Yes, Bethany is/was a mage, but if she died or is a Grey Warden they might not know that, especially if Hawke doesn't go around shouting that s/he is great friends with a blood mage and an abomination (I sure wouldn't.)

I also would've loved to see a slightly smarter friendship/rivalry system. Anders automatically assumes Hawke hates mages if you rival him, when you may just hate the fact that he has a spirit inside of him. If they'd had more conversations, a pro mage anti demons Hawke might've been able to explain that they aren't siding with the Templars? Plus, if you're befriending, say, Merrill but hate blood mages when you aren't doing her quests (and only choose pro blood magic options when she's in the party), perhaps she could confront you about that. Sure, your character might believe that Merrill can control it, and her goal to restore the Eluvian is a good one... Ahh, ignore that tangent.

I'd also cut down the timeline from, like, seven years to having a year, maybe two, in between each act instead of three. If each Act is one year, with say a year in between, it wouldn't go on for so long that it's weird for the characters to not have aged much. It cuts it down from a decade to four or five years. Which would seem a bit more reasonable IMO, but that's just me.

But, what would you change to make DA2 a better game?

I totally agree about Ander's rivalry, it's too convoluted and doesn't always fit your headcanon.

And again, I agree that I'd like to be able to chat to companions whenever I want to and I'd cut the gap between act 1 and 2 to a year, not 3.

- I'd make more varied dungeons just to shut people up, that's what they always say when they criticise the game.

- Change the art style so that it fits in better with DA:O and DA:I, it's a little too anime for me.

- Get rid of the bad guys spawning in in waves.

- Give the Dalish something more interesting to do than just standing there for 7 years being decorative.

- Make the elves less alien looking.

- Cut Feynriel out of the story, he annoys me.

- Make Anders less miserable and more of his Origins self.

- Change Fenris's introduction quest so that it isn't so easily missed, a paragon Hawke wouldn't do it and could then miss out on meeting him (happened to my goody goody Hawke and I had to go back).

- Make Hawke's family less derpy, blimey some of them need a slap.

I love DA2, I think it's a great game in many ways that is much maligned.  But, as with every BioWare game, there are a few itches I'd like to scratch.

I want to see that at least one teammate noticing when Hawke chops it his/her blood vessels.

(Seriously: if Hawke can be Blood Mage, then would be nice some extra dialogue options, and some disadvantages.)

And yes, the game mechanic was weird. We know: Hawke do not use magic in Kirkwall's public streets (Act1-2), but only to one or two cutscene refers this fact: when Hawke meets with Feynriel's father, and later with Feynriel (@ArcadiaGrey: You must realize: Feynriel is important! ;) ) and the qunari scene (Act2).

Yeah I know, but the way Marethari says his name bugs the crap outta me.  Feyyyyyyynriel.  And he whines too much.  Urgh.  :P

I quite liked Feynriel. He is a dreamer, isn't he? Perhaps he'd be able to help us with respect to Solas in DA4.

I'll probably get raged at for this, but I found the friendship/rivalry system quite artificial, and while a smarter system would have helped, I think they should have just used the approval system that was in DAO and DAI (well, the DAI system was like a refined version of DAO's).

I agree that we should have been able to talk to our companions whenever we wanted. That was one of the things that absolutely ruined Awakenings for me, when we went from a highly interactive system in DAO to practically no interaction in Awakenings.

That is an excellent question.

-Remake the entire level design into an open world to travel around the Free Marches.
-Have playable back stories of companions whenever they decided to share their background.
-Revamp their combat design like the swordplay, dodging, blocking, &parrying should be introduced to mocap.
-Bring back shapeshifting class and be able to turn into a dragon.
-Make sex scenes explicit and tasteful.

This. One can be greatly disappointed with the world/ see everything black and still be a massive joker. Believe me.

I do like DA2 Anders. Not as funny that he was in the Awakening, but much interesting.

It was combination. With Justice... as a bonus. ;) 2 in 1!

Get out of Kirkwall more often. I like the city, just not that much.

Avoid killing off Hawke's family. What was the point of that?

Revisit the magic system. There were a number of spells removed that should have been in, and a number that were in that should have been left in Origins. Hint-Mana Drain-hint.

Shapeshifting is a given, and also bring back the dual wield warrior. That's all for now.

It was an important part of the story. Of Hawke's fate. It was necessary to the presentation, that Hawke can be strong, can be a hero, be one of the most influential people in a city, no matter what s/he do.

I definitely agree with some of those. Especially the lack of shape shifting, the lack of people noticing Hawke's cutting themself to use magic. I honestly like how you have to learn specialities from the companions in Origins - maybe Isabela could've taught the duelist speciality like in Origins, Anders Spirit Healing?, and ect. Blood mage could be by making a duel with Torpor maybe, or that spirit in the Deep Roads, or learning from Merrill?

I wish bard, shapeshifter or arcane warrior, and champion (or one of the Awakenings specialities) had been in there. Or something else - it's kinda boring to use the same two on all my mages, since I haven't made a Hawke who'd be willing to use blood magic... Especially with what happens to Leandra. Which brings me to my next point.

Leandra should've been saveable. When she was taken, I was freaking out as my Hawke was. I was so scared to find her dead, and I cried when she actually did die. The scene with Gamlen was touching, since he was now all my Hawke had left blood wise, and the talk with Avaline was the best in the game. But honestly, if she could've been saved, I would've taken it.

You don't have to kill off the family for Hawke to show that he/she is a strong person., and if you did, one death would have sufficed. It seemed punitive to me, and I'd have changed it.

Hawke do not lose everyone: Bethany/Carver may remain, and his/her friend and lover. Mostly.

They do not want to show that s/he is strong, they want to show: it does not matter what s/he does, despite strong.

I really want to play Fenris so I could kill Danarius myself. I would give him a horrible, agonizing, and slow death.

1. return the elves appearance to DAO Elves

2. give option of other races as Hawke (orphan taken in by Malcolm when raider/mercenary)

3. take Anders back to DAA self and show progression to Vengeance

4. give more background on Orsino and Meredith

5. more interaction with Meredith, Orsino and Arishok to flesh out characters

6. have more reaction/interaction with Merrill and Anders when HoF is Dalish

Anders being Justice was a pretty important part of the game, since he blows up the Chantry. So, I mean... Separating the two would totally change the game.
