During Electronic Arts’ Investor Day, Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wilson expressed expectations for the upcoming Mass Effect Andromeda to “break beyond” what was the core gamer audience as other games in the genre have done.

“And then we have Mass Effect: a whole new Mass Effect story emerging, a fan favorite. As a category role playing games or RPGs continues to grow and break beyond what was the core gamer audience. We’ve seen other games in the category do this, and we believe that Mass Effect will do that.”

Incidentally, EA Studios Executive Vice President Patrick Söderlund also shared a little detail about the game towards the end of his own presentation, mentioning that a crowd technology developed for Rory McIlroy PGA Tour has been adopted by the Mass Effect team to have big crowds that you can walk through. The same tech was also used in Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst to have a large crowd layer on the street layer. It’s also being adopted by other game teams within EA.

Of course they are. A lot of the core audience have doubts about the future of BW, they need casuals to help keep their boat afloat.

Will the crowds politely applaud if I make a good killing shot though?  And will the crowd yell 'get in the hole!' during a romance scene?

Crowd technology I've already seen in Ubisoft's AC:Unity.

Was that game so great that it's features someone should copy? No. It was utter pos and I regret every cent I paid for it.

Wtf does that even mean? Do they mean like how certain games, like Halo, have moved beyond the "gamer shooter fan" audience into a more casual gamer audience? I'm not sure if that would be a good thing for an RPG. Especially for mass effect. It might water it down too much.

I've been playing games since I had a goddamn Atari as a kid. I remember seeing the N64 graphics for the first time and thinking "these graphics are so ****** realistic". I've spent uncountable hours of my life playing video games, literally amounting to months probably.

Now, with a demanding job, I barely have time anymore. The time I do have to play games, I am VERY selective about which games I buy and choose to spend that time on. Before I wasn't.

As gamers get older, more and more of us are in my position. Surely they realize it, and need to cater to a wider audience. Especially with the more "mature" games. And this worries me greatly. I hate to say it, but I am watching this coming news of Andromeda very carefully and cautiously, and if they don't deliver, I won't buy the game.

But as I've said before, I'm cautiously optimistic. I hope it will be awesome. I think it *probably* will be.

So like we expected, this game is going to be watered down/gimped so it can cater to the causal market. EA is still trying to tap into the GOW crowd with this franchise, what a shame.

Just my take on what core gamer audience may also imply, but rather than appeal to casual gamers, who they may well be trying to appeal to, they may be trying to appeal to gamers who usually may not enjoy the genre or generic conventions of a Mass Effect game. Rather than just say they are trying to appeal to others outside of the typically targeted straight white male demographic, they are trying to appeal to other audience members as well, since they know they already have a fairly diverse fanbase unlike some other gaming franchises?

If I'm wrong about that I'm wrong, just my take on it.

Well, I don't feel very appreciated, since my patronage doesn't seem to be enough for them.

That's people who don't play Heroes of Dragon Age nor Sims Freeplay on phones.

People who didn't give a single cent into Dungeon Keeper 4 phones and were happily spreading the word around on what garbage that game is. If it can be called a game at all.

Those are core gamers. And I'm one of them.

Core gamers are people that used to be like me.   I'd play anything.  Crap or not.

I kind'a feel Kabooom's vibe about getting older.   But I don't really think that I've slowed down my game playing that much.  I mean, I have months played in just one game.  I think I have about a month played just in ME3.

Now, I'm much more selective about what I'll play though.  I don't get hyped very easily.  Take Overwatch?  Could care less.  If it doesn't have a story attached, I don't wanna play it.

EDIT :  Yeh.   789h, which translates to 32 days.   Could'a sworn I had over 1000 hours, but eh.   http://n7hq.masseffe...hen&platform=pc

Hey look, corporate BS speak!

Although better crowds could lead to them being able to do areas that are supposed to be well populated without having only like 8 people in them.

I have a great idea! Let's separate corporate from gaming and let actual gamers run things instead of wall street Vince McMahon wannabes! Eh? Ehh?

I read this more like ''Games classified as RPGs had success outside of the people who usually play RPGs''. Which is true, if you look at titles like Fallout 3, Skyrim, or TW3, and I'm sure these game's action-based combat systems helped with that a lot. They similarily want Mass Effect to attract that particular crowd.

Then again, it's corporate speak so it could mean anything. But I doubt this means they want to turn Andromeda into an IOS game.

Funnily enough, when a company that needs to spend millions to make a single game is run by somebody who doesn't understand business it doesn't tend to end very well =P

but it'd probably be better for us if EA didn't have to answer to shareholders like they do. That's the real problem in this scenario: the company answers to a room full of suits that not only don't know gaming, they're happy actively doing bad things for gaming as long as they make money off it.

I honestly think the EA hate is a bit old at this point.

The worst thing I can pin on them regarding Bioware is that the DLCs are overpriced and the microtransactions shoehorned in the multiplayer. But they obviously give Bioware the time and ressources to do whatever they wish, even delaying Inquisition by a full year. I really don't get the impression they are being pushed in any particular direction by their evil EA overlords.

I mean, hating EA made sense back when they screwed over Westwood. These days, they're pretty much the best (or, well, least bad) of all the AAA publishers I can think of. Which admitedly says a lot about the industry, but still.
