This year in West Virginia (hyuck, hyuck) is the year that these little guys start popping out of the ground and flying around everywhere while making noises up to 100 decibels. There will literally be millions of these little guys (and gals) and it only happens once every 17 years! Isn't that neat?! Some people think they're scary but I think they are adorable little bugs. Unfortunately they are not the brightest and they fly around like drunk pilots. Also, animals are going to chow down on them hardcore because they are super tasty. I was 15 the last time they appeared and used to feed them to my cats cuz they would go cah-razy for them!

Currently they are not out in full force yet since the weather keeps getting cold and start playing tricks with them but they'll be everywhere in the next few weeks! Now some photos!!!!!1!!!

There are some outside my window right now making noises. I know it's probably lame but I find them interesting.

I remember some newscast of those back then.

And not lame, I find this stuff interesting, too. Hubby says they had those in Australia all the time but apparently not in those amounts at once.

Props for the "Hi" picture - nice to see tha bugs can be cute, too :D

One just tried to land on me walking home from work. It sort of circled around my legs and I turned in circles to avoid it and i just laughed cuz it was kinda adorable!

edit-home right now with all my windows closed and it is still really loud outside.

I'd probably freak out by those all irl. I'm totally ok with possibly dangerous bigger animals, but buzzing things and any living being with more than 4 legs is too much for me. But they're fascinating to look at in pictures and documentaries. (except maybe the unnaturally manylegged creatures, they just give me the shivers)

Well, our quick daytrip to my parents' summer house made me think of this thread. There's always been some dragonflies over there... We used to call them helicopters as kids ...but this year right now there were loads of them!

Not in the same amounts as your zicadas, luckily, but still more than ever before. Dad said more than in the past 50 years.

I tried taking pics of the swarms but damn things were too quick and flighty (lol) that my phonecam didn't catch them. Until this one fellow, who sat on the hood ornament for a long time as I drove along the tiny road slowly, so s/he deserved a portrait. :) (With clicking you can actually see it better if interested.)

The cicadas are officially over. Been done about a couple of weeks ago. Kinda sad cuz I got used to them and even enjoyed interacting with them. Now it's soooooo quiet without them. Still their little shells and corpses are everywhere. Godspeed you little creatures. Until we meet again in another 17 years.
