Following on from my wall shields (TR's Pern Plaques) I have been accumulating (and making) various bits of heraldic graphics. In fact you might call it a kit of parts to simplify the making of textures. What I would like to do is to use these textures in the making of what I term battlefield (as opposed to wall) shields. In other words when a pc/npc/monster goes into battle, one of these would probably be on their arm. This is where I come unstuck and need the help of some kind person who would create a shield model, to my precise specification, for me. The specs are -

  1. Large shield size.
  2. Black all over but takes a single bitmap for the front design.
  3. Must fit this (see below) bitmap - click on image to download it.

s44.png

Obviously the finished texture will be converted to tga/dds as appropriate.

If someone could make such a model I would be grateful. Thanks in advance for any response.

I've viewed this twice now, and would help you, if I wasn't extremely busy. Does it show views yet?

It just went from zero to 113 views since you posted that reply. Thanks.

Hillarious, yet not, for I don't have that many eyes.

Don't have access to my computer with Blender right now but should be able to do this on Tuesday if nobody else has done it by then.

Only thing is, what are you planning to put on the other side of the shield? The image you put up for the UV map to conform to doesn't leave a lot of space for anything other than the front design. I'm guessing that's because the heraldry you've collected is all that shape, but there needs to be something on the image that's mapped to the back of the shield (and straps), and anything squeezed into the small space remaining is going to look very pixelated. If I've interpreted point 2 correctly, you could make everything other than the front be black by using just a small black spot on the texture, but it'd look a bit odd (like when you use pure black on clothing – you don't see any detail). Or did you mean something else? Just wanted to check to make sure what I'd be making is actually what you need.

Sorry for the delay. In answer to your questions - I am sorry for the confusion I may have caused here. All I want here is a shield that I can place designs on the front of. The rest of the shield may be coloured as you see fit using any additional textures that you feel are needed. I just need black around the edges so that the textures that I develop, do not have an obvious black border.

I currently have over 120 separate graphics elements that I intend to combine (not all at once  :D ) to create different shield designs. I have a palette of colours that I have adapted so that I can easily use them from within greenfish icon editor (I put a link in the tools thread a while ago). That looks like -

~TIOH%20Palette.png

These are the colours that The Institute of Heraldry (a US armed forces department) uses. Additionally I have adapted a graphic that I found via google into 4 tileable patterns so that I have the option of heraldic ermine. The white one of which looks like -

e1.png

I primarily made my base graphics to work best in greenfish but I am not averse to using other tools to achieve the look I want. As an example I took this -

s14.png

and this -

Xkeys1.png

and created this -

result.png

with a little adjustment of my base textures.

Hope that helps to clear up any confusion.

How's this? Tested with the front design you posted:

ATaB6Wm.jpg

You can download it here:

EDIT - http://s000.tinyuplo...317459198347452

In the download you'll find:

ashlw_011.mdl - mdl file (currently overrides first large shield - you can change this, as well as the texture for the front of the shield using notepad)

tfa_shield_back.dds - my texture for the back/edge/straps of the shield

tr_shield_front.tga - your texture for the shield front I used to test

Wow, that looks even better than I hoped. I literally just slung that design together in under 10 minutes. Your shield model doesn't just accommodate the design - it enhances it. Thank you so much. I'll have to see what I can come up with from my base pieces that justify it. Thank you so much. I'll see if I can stick to the rules (tincture?) of heraldry as well.

Alas the 7z file only contains the 2 graphics and no model.

<going slightly madder than before>

Seems I may have bitten off more than I can chew. Currently I am colouring in all the 2 colour designs that I have. Do you realise that for each 2 colour design, where there are only 7 colours to choose from and the order/position the colours appear in is significant, there are 42 variations (appears that the maths must be n * (n-1))? I've already done 420 shield base textures and that is only 10 patterns!

Here is an example of the 42 variations for one design -

Untitled.gif

These are of course just the base images for the eventual shield designs. There are the (what I call) embellishments (like the crossed keys above). I may also add some grunge as the last stage and/or use some of my Nordic runes in place of the pictorial additions.

For those wondering why only 7 colours - that is what the classic medieval heraldic designs were limited to. Black (sable), White (Silver aka Argent), Yellow (gold), Blue (Azure = Sky blue), Red (rouge), Purple and Green (vert).

I estimate that I will have done between 1600 and 1700 by the time that I have finished this phase of the project... (it's the sheer grind of it all that's sending me a bit cuckoo...)

Quick question - Is there a way to measure the distance (preferably in pixels) between two points of a picture? The two points are on the same line and by measure I mean other than by actually counting them. If it depends on the graphics editor just say which editor. Thanks for any reply.

It depends on what program you are using, but many have tools that are used to measure or guides for the magnetic centering of the images.
If there are contrary subterfuges that allow you to know the distances.
One easy way to know the distance and crop the image just at that point, see the size and then ctrl + z to return to normal picture.

In PSP 7 or higher, I know there is a tool that lets you select a region, while you are dragging the select tool, you can see the distance in the bottom left corner, however, if you drag up and left, the number will be one pixel shy in older versions. I assume all other basic drawing software greater than MS Paint will have this feature.

Measure tool in gimp, click than holding down mouse bottom drag to ending point, release. Give your pixel count in the status bar along the bottom.

Thanks guys. Now I can easily check that all the shield graphics are the same width. I know that they are all the same height but I have my suspicions about the width of some of them. BTW up to roughly 1100 different design/colour combinations but I've still got the more complex ones to go.

Those look good.. since the back of the shield is wood. I think it'll look even better if you give the emblems a wood grainy texture to match the back. It'll make em look worn. IMHO

Harking back to permutations, If you follow the Rule of Tincture, there are fewer (but still 20 if my maths is correct). No idea whether that rule applies to Pern, though.

As I read the rule of tincture (i.e. I could be wrong) there are only 2 that are not allowed. Those two are the yellow combined with white because you are not allowed to have metals meet (white = silver & yellow = gold). It also says that they have to contrast with one another and as far as I can see they do. I have only left the yellow/white (gold/silver) ones there for completeness.

BTW these are just general battle (i.e. not for display or house crests) shields, not meant for Pern as such. From my reading of all the books I have on Pern I can't remember coming across such shields only knife fights.
