Forget this! races are just too mainstream!
I want to play as a planet...Maybe Jupiter...Yeah,Jupiter would be really cool...

I want to play as a Krogan. I dont want to play as another Shephard with no personality.
Bioware with all their progressive PC banter still will only allow you to play as a white man/woman with different shade of color and I think its backwards thinking and not progressive at all. Especially when we already played 3 games as a boring human already!
While being racist might possibly be the reason, i fear it's just a lack of originality. Being human is something we do, while playing out the lives of other races requires sticking within the boundaries set within the series. It's difficult.
That being said, the fact so many species have been introduced, we're bound to wanna play as them to learn more. Maybe at some point they can consider the view points of other species during the original trilogy, something novelists sometimes do to expand their own stories. I'd welcome this because, really, Shepard wasn't the only hero.

If it turns out to be a Sailor Moon game, why not?
It's racist. Only being able to play as a human being because the human race has lost their home and has decided to invade another galaxy and take it for ourselves is definitely, really racist. Now, if I could play as a quarian or an asari that just happen to accompany the humans in their quest to eradicate an entirely indigenous population... well.............

Playing an asari or quarian or (substitute any racial group here) who is intent on eradicating the indigenous population of Andromeda would be just as "racist" (against the indigenous population) as playing a human intent on doing the same thing.
You know this is bullshit. Racist against non-existent alien species? What the bloody hell. Really? I mean come on! Of all possible things to complain about?
If it turns out to be a Sailor Moon game, why not?
Of course not! Why play as the Sailor Jupiter when I can play as the real God-Planet Jupiter?

There is just one rule in the Solar System...Dont fcuk with Jupiter!
No, it isn't? Wtf?
I think OP needs to go back to Tumblr, and stay there.
Would it be impossible to suggest that maybe there actually is on some level some racist element presented by this fact and that it doesn't really matter? Like, it does matter, obviously, but..
Racism is like insanely common and I can honestly say if we're trying to find problems with people/institutions/things ME is not where I would start. This isn't to dismiss it, should it exist, but simply to say the priorities seem skewed here.
I can think of people where I'm like hm, maybe they are slightly racist but what should they the most attention when there are so many people/places/things so much worse?
I mean.. I thought it was "weird" lets say that the VA for Vivienne didn't you know, look like Vivienne, and if it were me I would of uh well gotten someone that looked like Vivienne to voice Vivienne. BUT, I mean it's a game, and like I say...
I think the problem here is the fierce competition to produce "superperfection" and universes and peoples, not Mass Effect, well, in addition to problems ME might have which of course couldn't be ignored but nonetheless.
I'm pretty sure it's not racist. Xenophobic? Probably, but not racist.
¿Racist cause we cant play as any other race but human? The racist card here is the most stupid thing Ive read hear, using the racist card on fictional alien and stuf.
I agree that I would be awesome to play story mode as other SPECIES(not races) like in Dragon Age, but for the sake of the narrative, the main character on (main)HISTORY MODE will be human. You will later be able to play as any other alien SPECIES(not races) in MULTIPLAYER.
Suggestions aside, it would be great if Bioware makes sides history where player could control directly other alien companions.
I am disappointed by the lack of a Rosa Parks reference in this thread, if we are seriously going to have a conversation about not being able to play as an imaginary non human species, but with anthropomorphic attributes, and compare this to racism, someone should take a stand and make a Rosa Parks reference.

By that logic Brandon Keener should've had mandibles and fringes, Ali Hillis would've been blue with tentacles on her head and D.C Douglas would've been a flash light. But yeah, damn racists and their humanity privileges! I bet Cerberus is behind all this especially since they're headed by that patriarchal bigot, The illusive man.

I was just surprised is all, I'd be shocked if there wasn't some Vivienne looking VA trying to get into the industry... not that the person who did was bad or something but I just expected to see a different face....
But you are right it's not like a requirement or something that VA look like what they're voicing, it just seemed logical to me though... I guess.
It cuts the other way too. Ashley Williams' VA is black, for example.I was just surprised is all, I'd be shocked if there wasn't some Vivienne looking VA trying to get into the industry... not that the person who did was bad or something but I just expected to see a different face.

Indira Varma was cast because she's a talented actress, not because there was some agenda behind it. With VA work the appearance of an actor shouldn't matter unless their appearance is being used to render the character.
I didn't say there was an agenda about it, I just noticed it is all and thought it was weird.
Anyway, I don't know about the VAs for really any other the ME people. Maybe they should all just be whatever I guess I just thought instinctively maybe it would make sense for them to look like the people their voicing, but like what do I know obviously....

Before complaining why don't you see whether ME:A story would fit any other races, or, instead it's specifically aimed at a human protagonist only?
And if that's the case I think there would be nothing to complain about, since they have the right to create the story the want.
For chrissake people, turn on your brains. Every time some sort of discrimination happens, it is not always racism, or race based.
In the case of this thread, do not conflate race with species.
Not being able to play another race, e.g. Krogan, Asari, etc does not constitute racism, as those species are not of the Human race.
See speciesism.
I wouldn't even call it that considering the Mass Effect races are **Fictional**.
I'd call it having way too much time on one's hands...
Somebody needs some real problems (not that I necessarily wish it though
).
I admit it is highly disappointing to me that I can't play a main campaign Asari.
The most I have to hope for is some dumb multiplayer thing again.
Really lame.
