I just want to say that Avvar is now my favorite warrior. :P  I can't stop playing him.   So this morning I have a level 1 Avvar and no PUG.   I don't think I could solo Perilous without any help.. but then I thought if I have my KM upgraded maybe I could.   So I went into Proving Ground.. and got to level 2.   I thought I remember proving ground would get you to level 3, but I got the KM upgrade so I am good.

Spent the next 21 minutes in killing venatori and I was like soooo close to finish off the commander but I ran out of fire pot.  With only 100 WP, her fire damage still hurt quite a bit.   So I thought hey at least I should be like 8 or 9 levels.... look at the screen... 253 xp!   WTF DAI you stupid WAI. :P  So now I have a level 3 Avvar. :P   It was still fun though.   I wonder if anyone pop in to my game and saw lv 2 Avvar... I am not joining this game......  I don't blame them....they probably thought.. this guy probably died the first try after killing 3 guys... and trying again.. lost cause.

Never put Drakescae on Izzy.

Keep her in her original, let her get downed, and when she starts crawling, it's clear why.....

I have slowly been changing all my characters out of drake scale just due to fashion reasons.  I don't think the drop in armour values is harming me too much. Isaela and zither and Avarr boy all look far far better in earlier garments.

Vents are the toughest class to solo if you ask me, by a lot.  Used to be the easiest class but they really buffed whats her face big time.

It was just the freaking barrier came up just when I was about to finish her.  My 1000'ish per attack just not fast enough.   I could have charge her and KM ice to generate some guard to gain extra time, but I was sure I could kill her when she was down to a thin thin line of red and I don't want to move my position afraid that she will escape my stairs trap.   But then.. PUFF... full freaking blue.   Barrier should be illegal. :P

Vent in NM is awful when I don't have full magic defend.  That's why all my guys are wearing lightning resist belts LOL :)

Yup, some classes can sail through a match but get in big trouble against her.  I hate having to kill all the mooks 1st but that ends up what I have to do most of the time with classes that are depend ton getting guard or heal on kill to keep going.

I don't run any characters in Drakescale anymore. It is hands down the ugliest armor in the game. I GLADLY give up some armor rating to have far better looking outfits.

I'm almost to that point.

I'm no where near MAXDEF, but the numbers aren't too bad so I'll give this a shot.

Who needs max defenses? I would rather be dead on the ground looking fabulous than be alive wearing that ridiculous drakescale armor.

Just a few weeks after I posted on this thread that Avvar is "squishy", I have solo'ed NM with my Avvar this morning. :P   Well, some people did join at the end after I killed the commander and almost done with the rest.   It is my first Avvar NM solo, my first Warrior NM solo, my first NM solo.   I could have solo NM with my Saarebus or Silent Sister, but usually someone would join the game before map 5.   But this time nobody joins.. except at the end.   And HunterK was there at the end to bear witness!

I just want to thank everyone again on this thread teaching me how to play the entirely not squishy Avvar. ;)

Yeah when I got out, I saw your name on the banner. :P  Hey when did you sneak in.. I was wondering.   I think I have a video of it.. hopefully I could handbrake it tonight and upload it to post.   So I could get some more pointers on improving my Avvar.   BTW, several places in the match I fully made use of the charge bump into shield technique.  That was just awesome.  It is kind of weird because when I charge with SS or Katari.. I try to aim away from the shields...

Yeah I had to go really quick.  I actually thought I would die mid match and it will be short.. so I could get to work in time.   I was very late. ;)   Your name did show up on the winning banners though even though you were not in the circle.   I thought you got xp.   I think the other guy got xp since he was actually in the match and victory circle.

BTW, I think I was the ONLY PUG lobby this morning.   I tried joining Perilous PUG, no one was there.  Went to check threatening.. no one was there.  Go back to Perilous solo with Avvar.... finished it.. no one joined.   Decided to do a suicide solo run in NM... ended up not dead but soloing it pretty much.   Used to be, it was easy to join Mexican Viper's game in the morning.. but now he is off on the Witch hunt.   And Gekko seems to be off somewhere else probably playing another game. :P   I can't get my morning 2/3 games in before work with people anymore. :(

I should also thank everyone for showing me the true potential of the Avaar. He is now my go-to warrior after I had sidelined him for quite some time. Still waiting on the Hakkon greatsword to really utilize him but he's still great.

And lcneed, I see what you're saying about slow PUGs in the morning. But believe it or not, 2 other friends and I had 2 different randoms join 2 separate heartbreaker matches yesterday though it was at night. I was so surprised. One of them was pretty good and held his own; the other one... not so much haha (level 8 Archer with starting armor... ) but we still surprisingly completed both even though zone 5 took like 20 minutes with all the commanders and their constant barrier generation.

Uh...it was lost......in the wash.....with a sock.....  I meant to say his highest level Armour with the ugly mask.  I prefer his white mask and lilac out fit now.  (Has it really come to this for me?  worrying about character looks in this game?)

Okay, here we go.  Sorry if I overdid it a bit.

Let me start out by saying that I love how your first Nightmare solo was using an Avvar against Qunari!  BRAVO!

Playing the Avvar well mostly hinges on three key components.

  1. Knowing enemy weaknesses and immunities
  2. Having a solid rotation of abilities
  3. Focusing on priority targets and groups instead of single combat

How well you can play the Avvar depends of how you can adapt these three skills to the situation at hand.  You need to know when to fight in a large group, what abilities would be most effective against the makeup of that group, and switch up your rotation depending on that assessment.  You also need to know when to cut and run and fight only a few enemies at a time.  This is when it is most important to know which elements to use and which Elemental Affinity buffs are most necessary.

Things you did well:

  • Focusing on priority targets (e.g. Saarebas, Commander) and letting the cannon fodder group up around while you whittle down the real enemies.  Too often I see Avvars focusing on one or two enemies while they could be hitting the damage sponges and dangerous enemies and all the mooks.
  • Ability Rotation:  I won't get into this much, because I cover it in more detail down below.  Let me just say now that for the most part, this was excellent.

Things that could use some work:

  • Knowing which enemies are immune to which abilities.  Now, I don't mean to say that this was bad.  I doubt you would be able to complete the match if you didn't have a grasp on this, but there were some times that it was obvious that you weren't using effective attacks.  Mostly, I saw use of ineffective abilities against Shock Troopers (examples: 0:25, 3:10) and Spearmen.
    • Shock Troopers are immune to both fire and ice, but I saw frequent use of both Hakkon's Charge and Crushing Leap (as well as follow up Korth's Mights) against them.  At 3:10, you use both abilities, which wouldn't normally be that bad because there are other enemies around that are not immune, but you spent time hitting and killing these enemies with autoattacks, then used both abilities after they were dead and they had no effect on the Shock Trooper.  Watching you fight Shock Troopers in zone 5, you seem to understand what attacks to use and not to use, and when to use them, so I'm going to chalk this up to a brain fart.
    • Spearmen are immune to ice damage, yet is saw somewhat frequent use of Hakkon's Charge w/ follow up Korth's Might against them also.  Now, this isn't necessarily always bad, seeing as you do get extra defense from Chilled Defense and Elemental Affinity, as well as a knocked down target (Coup de Grace FTW!), but you do tend to do it even while you don't really need the defense buffs (worth pointing out that using an elemental Korth's Might does not refresh the timer for Elemental Affinity buffs. If you use some too frequently, instead of refreshing and keeping the buffs up, you could end up having to wait for another cooldown/rotation before you get them back up.  Keep an eye on those buff timers!)

The gray areas:

  • Ability Rotation (Good):
    • Hakkon's Charge and the follow up Korth's Might are frequently used as soon as they are off of cooldown.  This keeps up Chilled Defense and ice Elemental Affinity for the majority of the time.  All in all, and very solid survival strategy.
    • Lady's Wrath is also frequently used as soon as it is available.  There are some times where you probably should have used it before other abilities in your rotation, but usually you used it soon enough to not make much of a difference.  Having Lady's Wrath up as constantly as possible is almost always a very solid DPS strategy (The major exceptions being Horrors and electrical Spellbinders  and Mages.  The minor exception being Pride Demons, seeing as usually there will be trash mobs congregating on you while you fight the Pride Demon, and you might as well be electrocuting them as well while you whittle down the big guy.)
  • Ability Rotation (Bad):
    • Hitting enemies with abilities they are immune to.  We already talked about this in the Could use some work section. Basically, just learn what enemies are immune to and cut it out of the rotation.
    • I see you occasionally skip some Korth's Mights, mostly the fire (increases damage).  This one can be very useful when fighting large groups, such as in zone 5.  This is just the other side of the same coin as overusing ice Korth's Might on Spearmen.  I guess just try to balance out your Elemental Affinity depending on what your are facing.
  • Prioritizing Targets:  As I said earlier, this was mostly excellent.  That being said, don't be afraid to cut and run when it gets too hot.  There is no shame in using line of sight to stay alive while pulling enemies around a corner.
    • Sometimes you need to know when to abandon the mosh-pit and seek out those annoying ranged enemies that spawn in while you are occupied fighting the crowd.  Situational awareness is always important.  For the most part, you do realize when this is happening, such as in zones 3 and 5 (good example: 17:00), so I don't really know why I put this in here.  Maybe it could use a tiny more work?
    • Sometimes you need to cut and run when it gets too hot.  Saarebas DoT puddles (example: 6:50) and the Commander freeze nuke to name a few.  In other factions you might have to watch out for multiple Despair Demon ice beams, Bolters, Emissary projectiles, etc.

FINAL RATING: 83/100

Points deducted for using a potion before zone 5, as well as the use of ineffective abilities on certain enemies.  Bonus points added for the super fashionable flaming ice sword  B)  Bonus points then removed for the super un-fashionable use of Drakescale

Quick tips for your everyday Avvar needs:

  • Hakkon's Charge has no cooldown if it is interrupted.  Spam it against shield enemies!
  • Hakkon's Charge has built in Guard Smasher.  If see the opportunity, try to save it for that moment when Pride Demons, Ded Trampler Commander, and Behemoths put up guard.  Most entertaining to do it to Behemoths because they are already weak to ice, so you can get some HUGE numbers and one hit kills sometimes.
  • Lady's Wrath will give an extra damage tick when you hit enemies in its field with another ability.  If you can, put Lady's Wrath up before you start the rest of your ability rotation.
  • Pull to walls and corners.  I can't stress this enough!  You can kill whole groups that would normally put an end to your run before they ever get a chance to hit you.
  • Use Korth's Might frequently.  As Pronto said, it's like four attacks in one, and it comes with sweet buffs!

Spot on with the immunities!   Believe it or not I actually know about the Trooper's one because I still remember I have to kill them with my Saarebus's staff basic attack when my trusted AB fire and ice failed.    But other than that, I don't usually pay too much attention to NM immunity as I usually have a team in NM and nothing is immune to the team! :P   I didn't know that spearmen are immune to ice.

I was kind of just going to muscle memory during most of the match... following the sequence of attacks... HC, KM, LW, KM, CL, KM.. etc..   until I realized the troopers are not dying too fast.. :P    I did made some adjustment later on skipping out some of the attacks that won't do anything.  About skipping KM.. probably because I prioritized HC/ICE KM ahead of others.  I still kind of scare of playing Avvar so I am playing more defensive.   I think as I play more of him I will feel more comfortable of not recharging my defense/guard before it is needed.

I agree with everything EXCEPT drakescale.  I made all 3 colors of the Avvar's normal armors.. and they all made him look like a giant cockroach!   I have actively trying to remove drakescale from my agents.. but I just can't do it for Avvar, Lego, and Silent Sister.   I can't stand cockroaches (even RL ones...).   Lego's normal armor got this butt flap piece that bothers me.   And his captain armor shows his arm pits.. don't want to see his arm pits.     I guess I could go with SS's normal outfit...but I don't find it really better than drakescale.. and once I get to 200 cunnings I will never play her again.. so it doesn't really matter much at this point.
