At least, I know who to personally blame for all the noodle arms (and her!)

Seeing all their concept arts and digital arts. They had all the attention to detail to everyone but I don't think they ever considered a woman as the main character of their game...and they're also MEA character design team...

Will history repeats itself... ?

You don't need to look like a bodybuilder to be a soldier. Some strength is required, sure, but fitness and general combat skills (aiming, awareness, stress management, etc.) are more important.

That said, ME3 Shepard's twig arms weren't what I think of when I picture what is basically the most elite soldier humanity has ever produced. Yes, yes, cyborg and all that, but a human that can punch Krogans and a Yagh to death should look the part.

Well, they didn't.. you're kind of right about that. Hudson got in some trouble pre-release, for saying they developed the Female Shep at a loss.. and something-something about how people should be grateful or something along those lines.

Point is, it kind of illustrates the difference in commitment.

Just think: if they were willing to loosen up on the requirement that every female must please everyone and be considered universally beautiful, they'd sure save themselves an awful lot of work.

While I don't mind Allers that much, every time I see her, I remember the spandex tennis dress exists.

@^#$&@, I hate that thing.

She can kill people faster than anyone in the game bar a charged Widowmaker headshot or point-blank Reaper headshot, has functional invincibility every 7 or 8 seconds with her shields (and can give them to teammates) that buff her damage, and is able to shut down an entire team with her ultimate. Her only flaws are her lack of health in comparison to other tanks and her poor mobility.

You are terrible at Overwatch if you think Zarya is a bad character.

Every aspect of her power is potential, situational, not inherent. She's a close-range character with relatively low HP that needs time to set up everything. She's outclassed by other characters in every way. If you want a powerful tank that can deal a lot of damage you want Winston. If you want to support your team and be relatively invincible you want Lucio. If you want to dish out damage and wreck the entire opposing team you want Genji. Zarya would only be a good character if you were locked into your hero for the entire match. If that were the case she would be top tier because of the utility she offers. But since the game is designed to make you switch heroes frequently a "jack of all trades, master of none" character has little merit.

And anecdotally, I always wreck Zarya with pretty much any character. I can't even tell you how many times I've rekt Zaryas with Mei from mid-range.

Actually in terms of Overwatch they have done pretty well with body types. You have buff Zarya, tiny&chubby Mei, curvy Widowmaker and skinny Tracer. In terms of male characters you also have variety with having regular muscular hero types, but also characters like Roadhog, Junkrat and Torbjörn.

This is only fan interpretation, but if you could have diversity in protagonist and maybe also NPCs body types like this it would be quite ideal.

I was just thinking the same thing. Thank you for posting this.

IMO, the different body types in Overwatch, not just with the female characters but also the males, help to make the individual characters even more memorable and distinct. TF2 did something similar with its all-male cast, and I believe I read somewhere that Valve intentionally did this so that players could easily identify a class based on their silhouette.

While I agree with you in general, I just want to note that Mei isn't as chubby as that fanart. That's just because of her polar exploration attire being so thick. We see what she looks like out of it in the concept art.

Good luck on Bioware ever being as good at design as Blizzard. They can even make technically crappy games look charming.

edit: Not that Overwatch is one of them.

But wasn't Overwatch in development for like 4 years? That's a long time to make what is basically half of a game. If the characters hadn't been good it would be laughable.

I had no idea it was that long..

But mostly I meant technically, as in their graphics. Like WoW was kind of outdated, but it still looked better than most mmos of the time, because of the art.

I'm under impression that it's not from concept art, but early concepts and those can change. But yes, it's not sure she's chubby, she might be short and curvy instead underneath the jacket.

Winston has THE lowest DPS of all the tanks in the game, other than D.va from a far enough distance. "Relatively low HP"? I hope you mean just for the tank characters, otherwise no, she outclasses every single person who isn't a tank in that regard. Not a single character's power will be inherent, that's the whole idea behind class-based shooters. Genji is by no means designed to kill the entire team, he has no method of dealing AoE damage outside the swing arc on his ultimate, so unless you're fighting 6 people who are both blind and deaf then Genji won't be wiping any teams.

I get the feeling you're not very good at the game and that you're projecting.

In what way is Overwatch "half a game"? You also conveniently ignore that it was originally going to be another MMO before they completely redesigned it as a shooter.

Winston is one of the most mobile characters and he happens to be a siege-machine, whereas Zarya takes forever to get anywhere and just as long to charge up her weapon and abilities. If you actually think Zarya is a better tank than Winston then it's clearly you are bad the game.

And I've wiped entire teams with Genji, so yes, he can do it.

Are you kidding me? It's an online-only hero shooter with very few game modes and it's priced at $40. Compared to something Battleborn, which has way more than twice as much content, it's not a full game. Just because it's great at what it does doesn't mean it's a full-fledged competitive shooter.

Zarya is weak alone, very strong in a coordinated team, you just need to support her. Bring along Hanzo, Tracer or Pharah, release her ultimate and let the others release theirs, bam entire team dead. Also that pulse cannon she has gets amplified by absorbing with her shield.

As for the amount of content, well, on all multiplayer games I've played people tend to play a small rotation of maps and modes. Yes it's light on the content but first of all it's extremely fun and addictive, second Blizzard will add more heroes, maps, a competitive mode, and all free as opposed to EA's policies.

Right, more of team play.   That'll work well with a bunch of disorganized internet mobs of people.   Against a bunch'a friends on teamspeak/mumble.   Sure.   The internet mob won't get their ass kicked.

:o

Much.

This is what I mean when I say that Blizzard is pushing the edge of the .001% and telling the rest of us to "git gud".  If you find a game not challenging, but enjoy playing it, that's great.  Just don't expect me to play it with you.   2 wins and 738 defeats later, yah.  Those are about the right odds.

I hear this Mass Effect game is pretty good.

Though apparently I wandered into the Overwatch thread.

I just think the artistic style is better I mean I'm not an artist I'm amazed at anyone that can draw straight lines and make it into a cool looking figure... on those grounds Overwatch is pretty great.

As a consumer though I prefer the style in ME, even DA at times, it's less kind of comicy but it's not really photo-realistic either.

I kind of like the kind of basic art styles you see in like NES Zelda and stuff though too over the flashy modern stuff and things so I'm probably just weird that way.

Also it's actually the "lifting/overwatch" thread  :P

Blizzard has always been good at that cartoonish style of visuals.

Overall I'd prefer ME as well. I have to agree with what was said earlier that Overwatch does feel like it's a bit light on content, even for a $40 game.

I suppose it was inevitable to become an Overwatch thread, given that they do have variety of the character's body types and the game just came out =P

As long as Bioware have this attitude about females characters are only made to be slept with (hence the bigger emphasis on sexual attractiveness) and not to be played as a hero, they wouldn't make it a priority to create realistic body modelling of a female fighter. Even the teaser have the 'unknown' female using the same female body type.

Gosh, I wish I was more optimistic about this but we wouldn't know much for sure until EA play.
