Why couldn't he look away, though? We don't have that problem at any point in Inquisition.

And then, if I remember right, there's some kind of flash of light and then Mahariel is later found unconscious and tainted? That does not make sense alongside some darkspawn just stepping through the mirror. The darkspawn would have killed Mahariel, not left them on the ground. And they would have done it with a sword or magic, which would not lead to Mahariel lying on the ground with no memory of what occurred.

There was something more happening there. I think perhaps Merrill's eluvian is special and leads someplace specific, with specific and dangerous inhabitants. Or perhaps the eluvians aren't just portals, but also magic mirrors in the Snow White or Galadriel sense? Like they have an alternative use mode as a kind of scrying pool or something and that was what Tamlen had activated and, as a result, was physically unable to pull away when whatever the mirror was set to look at looked back?

If I recall, it is said that when the Tevinters found some mirrors after Arlathan's fall, they were able to use them for long distance communication, but couldn't unlock their teletransportation capabilities.

And it's certainly possible that Merrill's mirror was keyed to a specific place when activated.

Speaking of eluvians, I wonder if Tamlen's dialogue was supposed to mean something.

"It is showing me places. I can see some kind of city... underground? And there is a great blackness.

It saw me! Help, I can't look away!"

First of all, why would touching it send images into your mind? How could he see the Black City if the eluvians are connected to the Crossroads and not the Fade?

Also, he said something saw him. What could it be?

The Crossroads doesn't seem to be the only place eluvians can go.  OGB Kieran was able to use Morrigan's eluvian to enter the Fade and meet Flemeth, after all.

So I guess it's theoretically possible Tamlen accessed a way to the Primeval Thaig, the Blackened City, even a blighted Titan, maybe.

I thought it was Flemeth who used Morrigan's eluvian to allow Kieran to enter the Fade?

My understanding was Flemeth merely called to him.  But regardless, the eluvian was able to reach the Fade

Indeed.

On the grand scale, I wonder if that means there are actual mirrors scattered throughout the Fade.

Would make sense. Nothing says the mirrors all ended up on this side of the veil when everything went up in flames.

We do see some smashed Eluvians in the Fade several times in Inquisition, but whether they are real or not is unclear? I recall that some mirrors (or just the frames) also appeared in the Fade in Origins, but it's not certain they weren't also just manifestations of the Raw Fade.

Probably because some dark entity saw him. My theory is that he saw one of the Magisters. The Magister may have reached out and into his mind. This might also explain why the eluvian tainted them. A dark city underground? Sounds like a place a Darkspawn Magister would dwell.

It also makes sense that a Magister would be near an Eluvian, seeing as how Tevinter used them for communication.

And then, if I remember right, there's some kind of flash of light and then Mahariel is later found unconscious and tainted? That does not make sense alongside some darkspawn just stepping through the mirror. The darkspawn would have killed Mahariel, not left them on the ground. Correct. Which is why taint magic seems most plausible. Perhaps the Magister was trying to escape and some of his blood was sent through. Or maybe it was all magic.

Maybe. The eluvians in the Crossroads in Trespasser seemed to change the solid matter around them to reflect the locations they led to in the real world. Maybe the eluvian Tamlen used was doing something similar, and transferred a little bit of the tainted area the connecting eluvian was located in to the area Tamlen was in, but of course the transfer couldn't be made because both locations are in the real world, but perhaps the taint was able to get through somehow.

The shards of any eluvian can also be used to locate others when combined with the Lights of Arlathan. Which seems to indicate that any mirror can be altered magically to connect to a different mirror.

This is perhaps why Merrill's restored mirror connects to the Crossroads. Perhaps the Crossroads is the default location. So when the eluvian shattered, or perhaps when Merrill cleansed and restored it, the eluvian automatically reset to the Crossroads.

We have confirmation Merrill's eluvian leads to the crossroads? Last thing I heard about it was that Merrill cleansed it, but couldn't activate it.

If you do a free roam of the crossroads on PC you can see a most definite replica of her DA2 mirror in there.

But Merrill's mirror is the same one Tamlen looked at, and Duncan smashed.

So it's entirely possible that eluvians can connect to many places.

Also, 2 things:

1. Pretty sure the Vints might have a mirror or two lying around in their cities, remnants of when they researched the elven artifacts, and found that they could use them for long distance communication. So that offers Solas a way to infiltrate Tevinter pretty easily.

2. I'm curious as to who created the first of these mirrors as well. Was it Mythal? Or maybe June?

I'm aware and I agree. I was just saying that in the crossroads, there is a mirror that looks exactly the same as how Merrill's mirror was depicted in DA2.

Yeah, kind of non-canon if it isn't shown in the scene as designed by BioWare, but they did put it there for some reason. Not sure if it doesn't show up in a worldstate where Merrill was discouraged from restoring it.

Anyway, the reason why it looks different is because Merrill reconstructed it to look different.

Also, she couldn't activate it, but that doesn't mean its counterpart can't exist in the Crossroads anyway. Many locked eluvians existed there, as Morrigan pointed out.

As for Solas, he could probably infiltrate Tevinter easily, that's if Tevinter still has the eluvians and hasn't discarded them since then. But Dorian has likely warned everyone.

As I understand it, Merrill's mirror doesn't show up if she's rivalled.

While I believe Merrill is an arrogant and sarcastic ****** that is mistaken for a puppy, I'd like to see her reaction to eluvians popping up everywhere in Trespasser.

I doubt many people in Tevinter listen to Dorian, though. I'd expect Mae and the other Lucerni to do so, and maybe the archon would take it seriously as a matter of practicality, but that's basically it. I'd honestly love it, though, if Dorian purposefully found and kept an eluvian in a room somewhere and kept some kind of hidden trap around it. Just on the off chance one of Solas' people came poking through... lol

"Ah, yes, 'Evanuris'..." :D

On a more serious note, even if the Magisterium was inclined to listen to Dorian's warnings, there's also a new Qunari invasion to deal with.

Ok, we need a magister to say that now, complete with air quote usage. And he must be named Sparatus and have fashionably spiky hair. Make it happen, Bioware!

I think the other Magisters would take certain precautions just in case. Dorian was involved in the matter after all, so he would know the risks.

My head-canon is that my Hero King had fortifications built around the eluvian in the Dragonbone Wastes, complete with trapdoor and such. There are similar measures taken for the one in Soldier's Peak. Of course BioWare will probably mess this up as well.

There was an eluvian in Soldier's Peak? That was the DLC in DAO, right? With Avernus?

Little help here. I'm trying to choose which shield my Dalish warrior will be using by the end of my new DAO pt, but... none of them feel right.

Fade Wall? It got Fen'harel's image on it. His name may be invoked as a curse, but never for personal protection.

Portable Bulwark? Chantry symbol.

Duncan's shield? The description says it was meant as a gift for Alistair, so it wouldn't be okay.

Howe's shield? I'd feel like an hypocrite in Awakening. "Here, Nathaniel. I'll gladly return all of your family's belongings. Uh... I'm keeping the shield, though."

Yes. It's the one in front of those portals on the ground that either Avernus or the demon seal. Also, the higher ranking Desire Demon comes out of it.

You can change the heraldry in Awakening. But I would go with the Amaranthine symbol, since the bear is one of Dirthamen's trusted animals.

Does your Nathaniel use a shield? If so, give him that back then change the heraldry on Fade Wall.

I still would have to stick with the original version until the end of Origins.
