Often that happend because the Chatolic church tried to tax them or forbid them from conducting commerce with christians and sometimes even tried to seize their goods for the Glory of the vatican and the Church.

Which understandably upset the vikings, meaning they talked to their people and sent a sizable response. Small raid for small communities and full scale siege fleets when dealing with constantinople trade irregularities. Sometimes an understanding was reached afterwards.

And sometimes I figure there were vikings who just thought they could make a killing and set themselves up for life. Still happens today.

I am a Catholic.

... Do you know your history?

I dunno if declaring one's self Catholic serves as the best qualifier. Being raised it myself, I've met some who can't even spell Eucharist, let alone give you the definition.

Hence you must really hate this man

I don't get what EU crisis has to do with it.

Spelling I can understand, but if they can't even give the definition, it's hard to believe they're all that Catholic :D

For what it is worth, it is always nice to meet a fellow Catholic. I will admit that when I was younger I knew it as "the Host". When I was little, I never called it the Eucharist; around the age of... 12, I learned its name. You can laugh at me if you want. Anyway, I do not mind talking about my religion, but I think I should stop before the community complains.

There isn't much room to go laterally either forward or backwards.  In other words, you can go forward and backwards with a space pirate story.  You can't expand on that much, though if you want them to stay a space pirate.

What's so wrong about space pirates in all honesty?

If they give us options on how we play our character, I wouldn't mind a type of pirate idea.   For some of them, it depended on who was talking about them whether they were evil or heroes.  :)   I like pirates though most of them don't end well.  My useless pirate information:

Sir Francis Drake, Queen Elizabeth I, supposedly nicknamed him "my Pirate".

Henry Morgan became acting governor in Jamaica and passed an anit-priacy law.

Aayyida al Hurra (female) became a pirate and eventually became the main negotiatory with the Spanish and Portuguese governments caught to free some captives held by the pirates in 1542

Pirate Queen Teuta of Illyria took on Rome

I think one of my favorite's is Jeanne-Louise de Belleville who took on France when her husband was killed.  She sold her lands and had sex with a rich guy so she could buy 3 war ships and hunted down anything belonging to King Phiilp VI.  She survived and eventually retired to England "the only place where people liked the French just about as much as she did.  :)

Have to admit though my personal type of character personality would be someone like Captain Mal Reynolds or Zoe.

But since they say we are going to be explorers trying to build our new home, not sure what they have in mind or what kind of characters they will send with us.    Soldiers, farmers, trades-people looking for a new start.  Religious groups, people who were jailed for some reason.

Hopefully there will be a fairly wide range of options to build the new world and some real results from those decisions.
