There is talk about a Mass Effect movie from the video game. A Google search had one draft written and dropped already. Another one is  in the works. The fly in the ointment is that the Bio writers wrote a "sophisticated" canon and even a two hour movie won't get it all.

Here is a link: http://www.classical...-beast-film.htm

Interesting for me is where the movie story starts and ends, what will be dropped, where is the romance and which alien get's to fight in the squad?

Thoughts?

What's the point of watching a movie when you have a game to explore a story in?

Roughly $40 with snacks to see 2-3hr, watered down version, of a roughly +100hr trilogy I already own.

On the other hand we might finally get the ending that the games deserved.

I'd wind up paying the $40. But id do so knowing it could never do the OT justice.

And for the love of the biotic god keep anyone who has anything to do with tv scifi or star trek or star wars the hell away from it.

With all that being said it will never happen.

I think it would make sense if they make a Mass Effect movie not centred on Shepard and crew. They will never be able to satisfy everyone if they did. Look at what Assassin's Creed is doing. They aren't focusing on Desmond Miles, they aren't taking a story straight from the game, but they aren't breaking the established lore in doing this.

Mass Effect should really do the same. They can create their own character, villain and plot within the established Mass Effect universe. They can even set it at the same time as the trilogy, and perhaps even make cameos. Maybe set it in the two years where Shepard was dead. But it shouldn't focus on the story of the games. I'd be pretty annoyed if they opted to kill Wrex in the movie, or let the Rachni Queen die. There are to many variables to account for.

That is true but still it would be nice to see a movie focusing on the story that happened before the trilogy, like prequels. Just my opinion and oh, let's not forget Skyllian Blitz.

Edit: or as General TSAR said over here.

However, a Mass Effect TV series could potentially work.

The thing is, Ubisoft spun a new division called Ubisoft Motion Pictures and they have Assassin's Creed: The Movie.  A sequel is in the works.  Then there is WOW, the movie, coming out in 2016.

Mass Effect the movie, starring Shepard, could take place in ME1 and use a slice of the video game as the "whole movie" with creative editing. In any case, if Ubisoft can make a successful video-> movie transfer, EA would be foolish not to explore this potential market.

I believe the movie script cannot allow itself to be tied down by canon "irregularities".  Then these movie studios have a habit of adapting the game to suit the non gamer audience.

I've always felt Mass Effect would make a better TV series due to the amount of lore and the pacing the story takes.

It might not be awful, as long as it stays far, far away from Shepard, but it would probably still be awful (and they probably wouldn't let Shepard rest in pieces either, to add insult to injury).

This remains a terrible idea (and the best way to kill a franchise outside of a MMO, I think), and I have dozens of years and examples to back that assertion up. In the coming weeks, I'll have at least a couple of more, because it's impossible to look at the trailer for either the Assassin's Creed film or the Warcraft film and come away thinking "yeah, this will probably be great."

To date, we've only ever had one good film based on a game, and this is it.

A movie about the First Contact War would be cool.

If you were ever actually going to make a Mass Effect movie, the best thing to do would be to completely ignore Shep and company.

If you make anything about the games canon, people will complain about it.

It's true....and that's why the Assassin's Creed movie is going to do great. It's in the same Universe, but doesn't follow any of the games.

Um, yes. And the discovery of the Mass Relay behind Pluto.

Assassin's Creed is one of the ones that could probably get away with using one of the characters from the games.

Although in general if you're going to make a movie about a game you should really avoid the game's actual storyline since it's impossible to condense 12+ hours of gameplay into a 2 hour movie unless it was a really short game to begin with. It gets even worse if it's a game like Mass Effect where player choice was supposed to be a big deal.

I suspect the Warcraft movie will do great as well based on name alone, even though they're rewriting a bunch of the lore of the first game.

If i knew the movie was in competent hands, say Whedon's, i'd back it up. It still might be interesting if it ignores Shepard's exploits and presents more lore to peruse through.

My two decades of fandom (although that fandom is semi-retired until we get a proper new one) all but guarantee I'll see it at some point, same as Dragon Ball Evolution. I will feel bad about it, however.

Ugh. See, this is how it starts.

Though I guess he'd be the obvious choice, if wanted my hypothesis to be borne out to the letter.

$40 with snacks? How many ****ing snacks are you eating? I go to a rather expensive theater to see most movies and I've never paid $40. And why are you assuming a Mass Effect movie would condense all 3 games into a single movie?
