So I was plowing along on my 2nd run and frankly bored out of my mind with all the micro manage I had to do, mainly with an archer Leliana, which would stay archer for long, and then I've found the Advanced Tactics mod.

Well let me tell it really changed the game for my, my party is stronger than ever AND no more bloody micro managing which means I can focus on my char and really enjoy the game.

Now, why hasn't the game shipped like that? What was the point of giving crappy tactics in the first place?

I suspect that tactics was on their Top 20 list of "things we'd have spent more time on if we'd been allowed to" but maybe not in the Top 10. (Top 10 would be things like "make sure the endings/epilogues don't have bugged dialogue" and "find all the glitches like endless elfroot").

For me on PC, I agree that the built-in tactics leave *much* to be desired. The Advanced Tactics mod, though, might be a little more difficult for some folks (not picking on console thumbjockeys here, I mean anywhere) to learn and use.

I just wish that I never ever again saw a party member run towards and past me, away from all enemies. I'm much more likely to complain about weak/glitched AI (both party and badguys) than I am to complain about the basic tactics.

Although I do agree that the tactics leave something to be desired, it's perfectly possible to make Leliana stay in ranged mode with just the basic tactics the game ships with. Just set her behavior to Ranged, and remove or tweak any conditions that cause her to run into melee range unnecessarily. I believe she comes with a tactic: "Enemy: using melee attack-->Dirty Fighting," which really means that if any enemy anywhere on the field is using a melee attack on anyone, she'll run up and use Dirty Fighting on them. Needless to say, this is not optimal; I always change it to "Self: being attacked by melee attack--->Dirty Fighting," which makes her protect herself, but otherwise stay at range.
