Heh it was Bioware's first game
Was Kai Leng's Death a reference to Shattered Steel?

Can you be more specific? I haven't played that game, so I don't know what part of it you're thinking of.

I think it's in reference to Kai Leng's sword being shattered if you take the renegade interrupt

Oh, I see.
In that case, OP, I don't think there's any connection like that. They just decided to have Shepard kill him like that.

I actually think it's possible. Regardless, I think the name of the mech punching game in the Citadel DLC (i.e. Shattered Eezo) is a possible "smirk" cameo for that first game of theirs.

Now *that* is definitely a reference. But with Kai Leng I don't see them having their cinematic vision of a scene dictated by a vague reference to the company's first game (which I doubt any of the ME3 devs had even worked on personally). I find it much more likely that they envisioned a badass way to finish off Kai Leng that included the breaking of the weapon that killed Thane, among others.

It's still not impossible... we just will never know for sure. Bioware did slide in a lot of little "smirks" in the ME games and who knows what caused them to think of some of them.
