hahaha In Dragon age 2 you literally court your love interest for YEARS before you have sex. In DA:I the time scale from the conclave to the end of the vanilla game is about two years. Which was the same for DA:O as well. To me the romance arcs are ridiculously slow based on the actual game time scale. I don't know the exact times for the Mass Effect series but ME1 was over a year if I recall correctly, ME2 was actually pretty short and ME3 I can't recall the scales but it was over a year wasn't it?

You are recalling incorrectly.

Dragon Age: Inquisition took place around a year.

Dragon Age: Origins took place in less than a year.

And every Mass Effect game took place around only a few months.

Agreed. All that should need to happen to start a romance is for the PC to walk up to someone and say "Ay baybay want sum fuk?"

You bring up very good points, I admit that I overlooked the fact that she could very much be horny which makes perfect sense. Yes, she would be angry at Shepard who rejects her in the last moment. BUT. The suicide mission is the most important mission in ME2 for Shepard and he needs everyone at their best. The most logical solution would be to talk with Tali about that in the most Shepard way. Just discuss what they expect from the relationship and instead of leading her on just explain that there would be plenty of times for that after they save the galaxy. Or if the need is really strong just pleasure Tali through her suit while she can fool around with Shepard. Second base is still better than nothing.

got to agree with you there, although i have to admit i still liked the whole Tali romance as it was pretty much everything that i would look for personally in a relationship in terms of chemistry. But yeah i'll admit that they need to mature the characters behavior when it comes to rejection and their approach to the whole sex thing before the suicide mission and all that malarkey.

Bioware has gotten to formulaic with the relationships always culminating 5 minutes before starting the final quest arc.
It's silly that things don't get serious way sooner and intimate somewhere around the halfway point in the story.
Then the back end of the game would have honest relationship maintenance and the things that come after.

It needs time to bloom. It should grow. Sure sooner but not too soon. Let it build from dates to flirting on the battlefield and eventually sexy time. Wish I had a picture of Borat.

I agree that some people would react negatively about rejecting sex like Miranda: "You want to say that you don't want my perfect body?" But Tali? The quarian with weak immune systems who can actually die of intimate contact with Shepard BEFORE the most important mission? This is nuts. Of all the things she should react understandibly and admit that this is indeed a bad time for risking her health plus Shepard's quarters are probably crawling with Cerberus bugs. And of all people her romance should've been purely platonic. Plus it's not like she can't feel pleasure through her suit...

And it's not about seeking romance in the game. Games, like movies, are stories. In these games I don't look for a virtual girlfriend, I look for a nice chemistry between characters. In the movies romance happens for a reason, It provides stakes, gives the protagonist some character etc. Same with these types of games.

... and, if it suits your version of the story... you do have the opportunity to just not let the romance fully develop until after the suicide mission.  The "sex" scene question just doesn't come up yet, but it does not stop the romance from carrying over into ME3 (if that's where it suits your version of the story).  That is, you can finish the pre-romance conversations with Tali after the SM, she'll start her research then, but there is no sex scene.  You can head canon that they did it after the SM when it was safe... and then you can have the full romance in ME3 same as if you had confirmed it before the SM in ME2.  It's a option, that's all.

Hmm, do you know if you lose out on some romance scenes? Because I think you do in some of the other romances if you choose to not lock it in until post-mission.

Are you sure? I think I recall Wynne having dialogue if you are a mage in which she states that it must have been about a year since you left the Circle. Since I believe this dialogue is avaliable before the ending of the game, I think the argument can be made that Origins takes place, at least, in a whole year.

Can you remember where you have your numbers about the others from? I could have sworn that I heard that some of the Mass Effect games and Dragon Age: Inquisition takes place in an undefined amount of time on purpose.

I'd like to see a more steady build up, no "ninja romances" or something. Also I definitely want to see some sort of "friendship arc" for each important character. Just because you're nice to someone you don't want to get in that someone's pants. Sometimes you're just nice.

Besides that: I rather have few, but equally built up / treated romances than a dozen less-developed ones. Choices are good - too many options are bad. 'nuff said.
