Why can't I edit the default shep?

I've never noticed this until now as I always play the default shep, whether it be male/fem.  In ME2/3 you can take the default design and tweak it. In 1, I can only pick standard shep as is, or pick an entirely different design and customise them.  Is there a mod anywhere that allows me to use the standard John/Jane as a template and tweak the features from there?

Cheers!

Okay, so, to the best of my knowledge.....

Default male shep is scanned from a male model and is unchangeable.  I wanted to tweak it too but ended up having to make a new custom Shep instead, which sucks as they have much less detail in them.  I would assume you can't change him in 2 or 3 either.

Fem Shep is different as she's not taken from a real face, and you can recreate and tweak the default face in 1 and 2.  In ME3 they made a special fem Shep face which isn't changeable either.

I'd recommend looking at the Share your Shepard thread in the ME1 forum to get some inspiration, it is possible to make some good looking Sheps in the CC.

Ah that's the thing. I can never change the look of Shep because the protagonist is too important. It's a bit different changing the look in Fallout or Skyrim as the story is now where near as compelling.  All I ever do is change the hair style slightly to show fashions changing etc.

I'm the opposite, I like all my characters to look as different as possible so that they're all clearly defined in my head.  I've never used either default so never got attached to them, but I can understand how frustrating it is not to be able to change one little thing about them.   :(
