In the start of ME2 we see her talking to the illusive man IN his chair room place... So why did we have to go through all this trouble just to find the base?
Didn't miranda already know where the cerberus base is?

I think it's mentioned in one of the novels that the cerberus HQ constantly changes locations (ofc the view of the star in the background is the same so I don't know if the location was changed or not)

There was a chance for players to have had Miranda killed off in ME 2. So they needed some ability to find the place in case of her death.

Damn...how did I not realise that?
Curse these forums, they keep picking little plot holes in my favourite games.

It's Retribution. Every time an operative comes aboard, the station's moved. So Miranda might be able to give you a cluster, but it's still "needle in a haystack."I think it's mentioned in one of the novels that the cerberus HQ constantly changes locations (ofc the view of the star in the background is the same so I don't know if the location was changed or not)

Doesn't the star change colors in ME2 depending on the ending?

Yeah we learnt that the station moves from the novel, and also from the game depending on what you chose to do with the Collector base. It wouldn't surprise me if the station was just kept in the same cluster or hell, even in the star system most of the time and just changed its position around the sun, because like Jtav said even if you know what cluster or star system it's in, space is just so big that it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
You need it's precise position otherwise you ain't ever gonna find it fam.

There was another writing change that affected this:
In Mass Effect 2, the star you see in the Illusive Man's room is a hologram. He only ever turns the hologram off in one of the "Shepard dies" endings, where he turns it off to better look at the Collector Base if Shepard left it for him to utilize. The fact that it was a hologram also explains why the star changes color in the Paragon/Renegade endings, and why a different celestial image is present when Liara meets the Illusive Man in Mass Effect: Redemption.
The decision to make Cronos Station a base from which he could see an actual star that looked like the one in ME2 was an idea that they came up with while developing Mass Effect 3. The hologram made more sense, frankly, but what can you do? Retribution did indeed explain that the station moves, so I guess it still sort of works.

Plus, it's the same star as you can see out of the window in all of TIM's scenes, showing that it is not a huge screensaver but is in fact an actual star. (TIM probably tinted his windows blue for the ME2 paragon ending...)

I also doubt that everyone who comes to see TIM at the base is necessarily told where they are or where they're going - I suspect they might use whatever is the 22nd century equivalent of putting somebody in the back of a truck with bag over his/her head at least some of the time. Maybe Miranda was trusted enough to be allowed to pilot herself to wherever the base was at the time, but maybe not.

Weren´t these Cerberus shuttles automated, had a VI or so as its pilot? Ok no idea what the range on these things are, but IIRC you flew with a shuttle from the Lazarus station to the other one.
So perhaps Miranda always used autopiloted shuttles or similar ships or perhaps the shuttle jumps to the relay system and a long range ship picks you up to fly you there.
