How much of DA2 really happened?

But if Hawke was pro mage, for instance, Varric wasn't going to tell Cassandra that Hawke was rabidly anti Chantry from the start, which is what she thinks if Hawke was a mage.
He shows all the events that led up to making that final decision in the end. Hawke arriving in Kirkwall and just trying to protect his/her family and make ends meet. Helping to stop crazy blood mages and protecting the city from Qunari invaders. Supporting Aveline and the city guard. Meredith getting more and more zealous. Hawke trying to peacefully sway Elthina and befriending Seb. Petrice backstabbing Hawke and getting harassed by zealouts, etc.
This is so that she can see from Hawke's point of view that it wasn't so black and white. She comes away being more sympathetic. And vise versa if Hawke sides with Templars, she comes away seeing why the Templars trusted and respected Hawke.
And yeah, I agree Varric probably got a few little digs on Anders and Seb... especially Anders, who he likely felt really betrayed by at the time, since they were close friends, and because Varric cares a lot about Hawke.

From the initial story telling he greatly exaggerated the size of Bethanys breasts and totally under sold how awful her hands were. For that I cannot forgive him.

I'm sure everything that took place in the Blooming Rose was just Varric trying to freak out Cass lol.
No, my Hawke really bedded Jethann. He had Mark Meer's voice and was an elf like the Hero of Ferelden. She was paying tribute to the HoF.

Well when my lecherous Agressive/Snarky Hawke screwed Jet he was paying tribute to the male dwarf ****** from DAO's Pearl, also voiced by Meer. No, my Hawke really bedded Jethann. He had Mark Meer's voice and was an elf like the Hero of Ferelden. She was paying tribute to the HoF.

Ah. I didn't know he did that too. He's prolific ![]()

My take on it is that everything that Varric described in DA2 really happened, he just might have exaggerated some bits, like the number of enemies Hawke killed, the size of the spiders they encountered or... the number of identical looking caves they walked into. So details.
Varric tends to describe things as more exciting than they really were to make the story more appealing, but he doesn't make up facts.

... the number of identical looking caves they walked into.
Now this is one excuse I can get behind. However, it doesn't really speak well for Varric's imagination.

I prefer to handwave it as a combination of Varric glossing over trivial details, so Cassandra's imagination had nothing to work with;
"Honestly Seeker, do you expect me to describe every single cave, warehouse, mountain path, mining tunnel and sewer in Kirkwall?"

Huh. There's a silver lining even to the shoddy cave designs. ![]()

Why not? He even describes what kind of junk you loot from mass of corpses.
"And then Hawke found this emtpy bottle... and an old needle..."

Basically all plot holes, gameplay-story segregation and anything that generally bother you about the game is Varric lying/exaggerating. All else is true.

I've headcanoned that the nonsense Anders says about how the Grey Wardens forced him to give up his cat was a combination of Anders being paranoid and somewhat deluded, and Varric's artistic interpretation.
I also think the super-exaggerated female sashay and how pretty much every woman had enormous breasts is Varric making the world a little more to his personal liking. Except for Isabela's impressive curves. Those are real. ![]()
I think he gave Sebastian a bit of a raw deal, made him a lot more annoying than he might actually have been. Varric is still complaining about him in DA:I, after all. In Varric's story, Sebastian's hands are even a different colour from the rest of his body, making him extra weird. Or something.

Finished playing DAO, started playing DA2 last night and having so much fun.. I did miss the games!
To the question, Varric hasn't told what really happens so maybe all is pure BS or Hawke did alot more damage to the chantry that what Varric talks about. WE will never know the truth now. /sad face.
