What do you think about having a family member or reference to it? You could have cousin and parents in DAO, you have a family in DA2, you have a mother as an Earthling in ME series. You want dialogues to talk about your family like whether you're an orphan, self-made orphan, family, or something like that in DAI? I actually like Carver a lot, he's like an annoying little brother I have, but I could see it limit a lot of storytelling in a way, but in general, Shepard is a lot more defined than a typical RPG protagonist.
Ohana?

Meh. I guess I'm okay with this, if it's done well. In general, though, I don't think they need to get too intrusive with their writing. Give us a solid background, ties to the story, and reasons to act; and then get out of the way, so to speak.

What is Ohana? Is that a non-English version of Hannah Shepard's name? (She was from the Spacer background, by the way.)

In DAI, you could say you're an orphan or have a family, it just gives you an option to define who you are.

I never felt particularly attached to Hawke's family. I knew I should feel attached, but it never clicked. I felt sorry for him, in a very detached way, when bad things happened. I was much more invested in his companions, since they were effectively my companions, also.

Gotcha. I don't do Disney, but I've learned something new. Thanks.

Do you feel attached to Clementine while playing as Lee in Walking Dead or Ellen Page while playing as Joel in The Last of Us? Maybe it's just the way the game is being executed, the sibling basically with you for an arc and then disappear. There wasn't a deep bonding time like we had with the companions.

You don't have sex with your family. You're in space, not in the South.

I think that's it. It's been a very long time since I last played DA2. I do recall feeling that the DLC helped, since it provided some "bonding time" with the sibling. In the end, I think it's hard to top the companions with whom we, the player, spend time. We develop bonds with those characters. Unless the family member is in my party, they'll likely fall flat. We know that's a bad idea, since 90% of the people here think they need to be able to have sex with each and every squad member.

Don't remind me how many people want to have sex with Bethany.
Yeah, siblings were handled pretty badly in DA2, but if they provide more context and time spending with them then we may reach the same level of bonding as Joel/Ellen Page, Lee/Clementine.

I'd be up for a sibling party member. I did really enjoy Bethany in DA2 and she was the only party member I actually cared about (other than my bro Varric and my babe Anders).

Ewww. People wanted this to be an actual gameplay option? WTH?
I guess BioWare now knows that future sisters of the protagonist must be given ugly faces and unattractive voices. Eww.

Ellen Page?
It's a very common mistake. The character is called "Ellie" and Ellen Page was her model without a doubt. However, the voice actress was Ashley Johnson.
I love the idea of a family. When I play earthborn or colonist Shepard I made up a family for her in the military or old friends back on Earth so... ![]()

Well, there was a picture along with the dog tags, in the N7 day trailer. It looks like an adult holding two kids. Likely a parent or guardian, with the kids being siblings or cousins and the M/F protagonists. Now will your sibling/cousin live or die like Bethany/Carver, it's possible. Personally? I'm fine with a family, I'll find away to work it in to my RP. Unless they die before hand.

Thus far, portrayals of the PC's family in BioWare games have been less than inspiring.
Generally, I prefer defined protagonists, but parents and siblings just assume far too much about the PCs past, and referencing the past is the main thing that family has over a stranger. I'd rather just have family-like relationships with the crew. Then we wouldn't need to deal with "remember when..." or "that's not how you acted when you were younger..." moments.
I think family in an RPG could work, but the developer would need to devote a lot of effort to make it work well while not stepping on the player's toes too much. I don't think BioWare has enough time to ensure that would happen.

Agree with this, Bethany, Carver, and Leandra never left an impression on me. Just like the "bro" character (Garrus/Varric), forced friendship/relationship doesn't always work. Best to let the player decide who their character feels closest to.

Just like real life, family members are better heard from―or about, in this case―than seen. I have no problem with establishing background through dialogue, though. I welcome it.
As for the title, I thought this thread was about Oriana Lawson, and the OP had misremembered her name.
