The dog. Mass Effect is full of damned dogs.
PUG means Pick Up Group and is a term referring to playing with random people instead of friends or BSNers.
My particular theory is that PUGs are actually dogs and their paws are incompatible with the controls, hence their general stupidity and inability to play the game to a satisfactory quality.

Pugs are also massively inbred, and natural selection has tried and failed to claim them.

What if...
EA are growing PUGs to use as energy sources for their servers...
This could be big.
