Well I'd definitely recommend getting the first two games as well as Inquisition and playing them in order. They all have their good points and you'll probably be totally lost if you jump in halfway. As for which ones are the best, you'll get plenty of different answers for that. I'd recommend them all, and the first two are very cheap now.

Origins is the best. It features the best way ever of learning the Duelist specialization.

Try a demo from Origin. really it does help story wise to play them all in order but, any one of them can stand alone too. Origins does have the most DLC so, I'd at least play that one before either of the other two. A lot of the story there carries through the other two.

Inquisition is my personal favourite, but the others are great too. You might as well start with Origins since it's so cheap now and see if you like it.

(If it turns out that you hate the combat, though, feel free to skip forward to DA2 or Inquisition. I have a friend who gave up on Origins after a few hours but played Inquisition twice, and she didn't have any trouble following the plot.)

I'd echo starting with Dragon Age: Origins. It sets the stage for everything that follows. While I do think Dragon Age: Inquisition is better than Dragon Age 2, I'd still recommend going with 2 after Origins for more stage setting. Then finish with Inquisition cause it's pretty awesome IMO.

The way the world-building works really makes it better to play the games in order. A big reveal only works if you know why the thing being revealed is shocking.

All of my comments pertain to the PC versions of the games.

The three games are all fairly different. Which you will prefer will likely depend on what you like.

Dragon Age Origins was done very much in BioWare's old style (pre-dating Mass Effect). And while BioWare did call DAO an Action RPG, I know of no one else who has ever applied that label. DAO has a silent protagonist (no voice acting for your character) and no direct real-time control during combat. DAO did offer a powerful combat automation tool--its Tactics system--which allows you to program character behaviours. DAO is a pause-and-play experience where you need to headcanon any and all personality for your character. DAO also came with a full toolset for modding, and there are a great many high quality mods available for it. A complete playthrough would take roughly 80 hours (my first complete playthrough took 87 hours).

In my opinion, DAO is an excellent CRPG.

DA2 introduced both action combat (sort of), and a voiced protagonist. DA2 tells a much smaller story than the one in DAO, but it is a more personal story closely related to the character you are playing. That character is largely pre-generated; you get to choose class and skills and equipment (and program combat behaviour with an even more powerful Tactics system), but background and personality are basically done for you. Your character is always human in DA2. It is a more cinematic game, and gives you less control over both your character and the story. While it did not have a toolset, because it used the same engine as DAO many of the tecniques were transferrable, so there are many mods for DA2 as well. A complete playthrough would take about 50 hours (I never completed DA2).

DA2 has its fans. I am not one of them.

Dragon Age Inquisition tells a story much more like that in DAO, but also expands greatly on the action elements added in DA2. The voiced protagonist in DAI is implemented in a more neutral way, allowing players more space to roleplay (in my opinion), but also displaying less emotion and personality on screen (which DA2 did really well, if you like that sort of thing). DAI reintroduces race selection and choice of background like in DAO, and is also based heavily around exploration of the game world in a way that neither DAO nor DA2 was. DAI is built on Frostbite, and as such is only moddable in a very limited way. The Tactics system, which was present in both DAO and DA2, was completely removed from DAI, leaving you with very limited ability to automate combat. DAI also added a free-roaming tactical camera, which some people found very confusing or difficult to use (I like it). A complete playthrough could take well over 100 hours, depending on your approach to exploration (my first complete playthrough took 157 hours).

I think Inquisition is an excellent CRPG, arguably better than DAO.

I think starting with Dragon Age: Origins would be a good choice because it begins the franchise with an incredible storyline which the other two following games build off of. After Origins, it would be good to follow it by playing Dragon Age 2, as some of the characters you will meet in Inquisition come from Dragon Age 2 and Origins.

While all three of the games have their own strengths and weaknesses, I will say that one thing Bioware has been consistent with is creating memorable characters and the journeys you will share with them. The Dragon Age franchise makes you feel for your protagonist, as well as those accompanying him/her. If you do decide to delve into the Dragon Age world, do it, especially if you love a good story and making choices that will impact your Dragon Age world. :)

Dragon Age Origins is fan favorite and it's beginning of the story so it's probably best one to begin with. It's graphics aren't up to Inquisition especially with new gen consoles and ultra on PC, but it has solid story, characters and is overall great game.

Some will say skip DA2 but I disagree, it has great characters and is essential in understanding the nuisances in DAI.

So play all 3, start with the Ultimate Edition of DAO and if you like it, continue.  Legacy DLC for DA2 is essential, don't skip that one.

I envy you, starting over and being new to the franchise.....it's really good.   :D

I like pierogies.

That being said, you tell us nothing about your taste in games, so all you're going to get is a list of other people's favorite game. :) Personally Inquisition is my favorite of the franchise, by far, but I recommend starting with DA2 or you might be confused as to what is happening at the start of Inquisition. DAO pretty much stands on it's own, but it's old and doesn't have a voiced protagonist, and combat is clunky and boring, except for Mana Clash...how I miss that spell.

Start them all from 1st to last

If you do, you'll have a blast

Origins is the 1st to try

Though old of graphics

The cake isn't a lie

Next delve into DA2

I really like like it

Some think it's poo

Inquisition is next on the list

Some find it confusing

But some get the gist

All in all time and money well spent

People that don't like it?  Ya'll can get bent.

Sequence: 1, 2, 3.

The DA:O and DA2 takes place at the same time:

9:30 Dragon: Events described in Dragon Age: Origins begin, The Fifth Blight.

DA2: Hawke's family escapes to Kirkwall from the Blight.

9:41 Dragon: Events described in Dragon Age: Inquisition begin.

(Correct me if wrong!)

Most important DLCs: DA:O: Awakening, DA2: Legacy, DA:I: Trespasser (I think).

(My favorite is the DA2, but I know not everyone likes it. Nevertheless, it's an important part of the story.)

well I like dark souls. And the mass effect games. I've played god of war and loved it along with some gears of war and infamous.

I love batman games too.

I think you would enjoy both DA2 and DAI. DAI has the most amazing dragon fights and it sounds like you enjoy challenging combat so you could probably start with that, and if you like the story and lore give the other two games a try. Though you may find DAO a bit clunky. :P

I highly recommend the dlc for Inquisition, Descent, Hakkon, and Trespasser too, they all have some super fun combat, especially Descent.

If you get Inquisition, I would advise you buying either the GOTY edition or getting the base game AND springing for Trespasser. The reason? Trespasser comes with Trials that'll make your gaming experience a lot easier.

While I like Inquisition, a lot of my early difficulty with the game was due to the fact that it was RIDICULOUSLY easy to overlevel. The game really throws too much XP at you, and it was actually a struggle not to overly outlevel my opponents.

However, Trespasser introduced the Take It Slow Trial, which will halve the XP you get from quests, enemies, codexes, etc. While this may seem bad to you, I still nearly hit the level cap with that trial turned on.

Another option would be to get EA Access (PC/XB1) so you can dip your toes into any/all of them fairly cheaply. It won't include the DLC for DA2 or DAI, but it does for DAO.

I started with DA2 and it is still my favorite, but I do recommend starting from the beginning. A lot of things didn't make sense to me in DA2 initially, like templars and mages, or grey wardens. That stuff is explained more fully in DAO (obviously).

Then again I have a friend who played DA2 first, then DAI, and only now is playing DAO.

I also want to know. I know nothing about Dragon Age, is it good? Should I play the previous 2 games to get the story on DAI? Are there gay romance in it?

There is something better than that, good stranger, it is, of course, learning the Duelist spec via bisexual foursome with Zevran, Isabela and Leliana. Now, enjoy the game. You know you've earned it.

I prefer to call it "jousting" or "scissoring", and yes it is entirely possible. I suggest you try Zevran or Isabela for pure pleasure, or Fenris if you prefer well done angst.

Yes. Zevran from DAO can be romanced by males, same for Anders and Fenris from DA2 and for Dorian and The Iron Bull from DAI.

Leliana (DAO), Merrill & Isabela (DA2) and Josephine & Sera (DAI) can be romanced by female characters.
