How would you get into Skyhold if it were real?

I'm not certain how we got in there in the first place, but I figure that war table mission that "improves the route to Skyhold" would include reasonable bronto/horse friendly stairs.

You mean it's a separate zone, like the Undercroft? Or does it just not load the model, because its behind a door? I have that problem with Flycam -- even though I know the area is in the same zone (there's no in-game transition), if there is no viewpoint character in the area with line-of-sight, none of the model loads, so I see a bunch of nothing.

Pardon me while I go off on a tangential rant: Why is the Undercroft a separate zone? But useless stuff like the garden and the kitchen are not? It takes forever to load the Undercroft on my PC, and forever squared if I have any kind of texture mods. The Undercroft is the place I go to in Skyhold the most, by far, at least twice as much as the War Table. Why do you troll me so much, Bioware?

End rant.

It's not a separate map, so much as it's just inaccessible by the rest of Skyhold. It's sort of like Undercroft, I suppose. I don't believe you can jump off the balcony in your quarters and run to the mage/templar tower.

There is a false room, the size of a closet, behind the door in the great hall, that you can see a bit of in the final Skyhold party scene if your LI is one of those that pushes you through the doorway. Once you go out of that doorway there is just empty space; a pathway does not exist to lead you to the quarters. If such a path were to exist, there would have to be an elaborate path and outside set of stairs that leads to the Inquisitor's tower. There is in fact a "dummy" door that is on the face of the tower, leading to the interior stairs.

In the game, if you click on the door as normal, your Inquisitor's back is facing a door that you have presumably just gone though. This is a non-functional doorway. BUT if you look left and down from that spot, you will see more stairs leading away from that door. This pathway leads to the dummy door that is on the face of the tower.

Spoiler

Here is a full imgur album if you want to see the pathway I imagined for the hypothetical exterior stairs.

Perhaps I should make a video of this and upload it to YT...

I think it's because they put the customization options in Undercroft. The game needs time to load whatever you pick. So, it's in a different "zone" not for going in, but for when you come out.

I remember my very first game, just starting out in Haven. The first time I tried to get into the war room in the Chantry, I couldn't. My character would end up with no health and be unable to go through the door. Not sure what made it finally work right, but it would have been a real short game for me otherwise. I also couldn't get in the Inquisitor's room other than via cutscene (ex: the Haven dream). The latter problem was due to my underpowered graphics card, so it wouldn't surprise me if the other thing was too.

I think it's a good question. I appreciate the concept of Skyhold but it's not well presented in game. The view as you've shown is not conducive to actual transport in and out of the keep. And the entire sequence from IYHSB was completely impractical, as there was no way that the entirety of Haven could pack everything up on brontos and make the trek to Skyhold during the chaos of Cory's attack. Plus when we arrive at Skyhold it's presumably empty of supplies so we have to wait to restock.

Let's not even talk about the troops camped outside Skyhold's walls who are apparently okay with sleeping in the snow next to a frozen river.

I like the idea of Skyhold but the game forces me to headcanon too much in order to make it practical.

 i totally agree. in their lil camp after IYHSB they have tents and druffalos who carried stuff. I'm sorry there was a dragon shooting flames - how did they have time to pack all that stuff? (i know how long it takes me to pack for a family of 3!!!) and how did they get those pack animals into that tunnel, and so on and so on hehe.

There again, head canon is powerful stuff. Should be stuck in a jar and marketed. Who's in?  :D

Re the Undercroft - i think it's a seperate zone because stuff gets made there, so new items get added to the game. So I'm guessing diff server or just uploading new stuff (this is a vague woolly explanation i apologise) a bit like an instance in WoW if you ever played. Stuff happens. Like the Black Emporium is too, cos you can change your face.

Now I've said that it I'm realising it didn't happen in Haven.

Or in trespasser.

Oo oo, it's because Dagna needs a special containment unit. She has a whole warped time zone around her. That'll be it (i love Dagna  )

Interesting question :)

This is really interesting. I've sat and looked at the main building and wondered about this. I assumed there was more passageway inside the door to your quarters off the main hall, and the devs just thought you probably didn't want to see it so didn't include it, running along the side of Josie's office to the door that opens into the bottom of the tower your quarters are in.

I also tried jumping off my balcony in a moment of despair after Adamant (so  many lives ...) and it blacked out rather than let me drop to the ground below, and i ended up balcony.

Skyhold works, but only if you don't look too hard :D

That makes sense! Thank you, that Undercroft thing has bugged me since day one, but you are right, it does take time to load all that junk when returning to the main hall. And the exit time does seem to be longer than the entry time, when I don't have mods (both times are very long, so hard to tell small differences when I have mods).

Speaking of day one, I would have been scared sh*tless if I had run into a problem like that on my first run. Did I waste all that money for something I can't play? Waaaa!

That reminds me, I've been meaning to ask. Is this where Dagna sleeps in the Undercroft? I guess she misses the Stone being all around her, but why the prison grate on top? You might have to click on the images to get the full size versions to see what I'm talking about. Second image is spycam vis Flycam.

That might be where Samson is kept if you decide to experiment on him?

I've always looked at that as more of a drainage system than a prison grate.

Well, that's a creepy thought. But, I somehow doubt it, particularly since we have a prison in Skyhold where you see everyone you've imprisoned hanging out.

So that's why I never see anyone in the cells??? [Except that one time quiz guy was there and I didn't recognize him ]. Sounds like I need to throw some folks in the slammer! But, they are just too useful if you can recruit them instead. Hmm, maybe I'll lock up Erimond...you can't recruit him anyway and he's happy if you kill him. I did Tranquil him once though.

There are a lot of people the Inquisitor ends up judging that I think honestly did horrible things and everyone gets so grumpy when you behead them. Alexius sold out the entire world for one life. Crestwood Mayor did what he did, I can see the conflict in that decision. But then he stays mayor, that's what I can't abide. Miss Preachey sells people to the Templars that end up tortured to death via lyrium. Whines that it was necessary, but did she reach out for aid from the Chantry? From the Inquisition? From the crown? She's just as bad as Fiona, taking the first option that drops into her lap.
