Are they stored in the same location for all versions of ME1? In other words, will the saves/config files be in the same Bioware folder in My Documents if the game is loaded via Origin instead of retail disc?

 

Also, will setting them to read only once I've made edits be an issue?

The save structures are the same. Dunno about trying to write-lock them.

Probably a bad idea, as I'm quite sure (from memory) that MediGel upgrades increment one of the files at the max gel line
