Well I love magic and play as a mage in almost every game. But there is a major problem in Inquisition. The magic, the spells are almost all based on elemental attacks like fire, frost and lightning. Specializations create some diversity but you can only get one and they just add 3 spells. It shouldnt be like that.
In Origins there were so many spells even without specializations. Different schools of magic, different effects. Entropy for example was about control, defeating your enemies indirectly. Creation was about support and so on. All these schools had 16 spells each. Now I dont think we have 16 spells in Inquisition alone. Although it has some unique spells like Ice Wall or Fade Step, it is just not enough. I miss versatility of earlier games. I miss Glyphes and Hexes, Crushing Prison and Waking Nightmare. Hell you could even combine spells! And I hope there are others who agree with me on this so Bioware notices this request for their next game:)

I don't think you are going to get a lot of disagreement from DA:O magic lovers. I'm pretty sure "DAO magic was better!" is a Drinkquisition trigger.
No question the system has been dumbed-down and lost a lot of versatility and power.
You forgot to mention Mana Clash, by the way.
Every mage -- Circle, apostate or blood -- misses that one.

DAO combat in general was really tedious especially the mages who were really clunky in combat.
Specific animations that go into every single spell, in Origins it's just wave your magic hand for something rather minor to happen.Origins had a lot of spells, true, but lots of them became obsolete as you moved up the tree. My Mage Warden in Origins had a spellbar nearly full, but I used, what, 12 at most?

You probably chose 12 of them you liked as you played through the game. But someone else chose another 12 of them. But in Inquisition it is not possible to build something different. You just have to be an elemental mage. I never even used elemental magic in Origins or DA2.

I kinda think DA2 got the balance right for mage abilities. It's not full of pointless crap like half of Origin's spells, but at the same time gives you variety not just of playstyle but of concept (whereas all DA:I mages are going to end up at least somewhat elemental based).
