It is never not OK to tell scorewh*res off. It is the entire reason we got a mic. You tell those useless saps what they deserve. There is zero need to be nice about their BS. If they just want to kill instead of doing objective/missionwaves, then they should just go play CoD or something. Objectives are a part of this game, whether they like it or not.

And yeah, we talk even to the Pugs. Thank for revives, sometimes I tell them I'll be there to get them (I feel l ike a medic). And fighting the temptation to quote the krogan "Stop whining".. 
Bonus, when I play a Krogan and he says it.
And usually point out some time for shuttle, too - that has saved a few of our friends when someone goes a bit killhappy and doesn't realize it's time to ship off. 
A whole another story is the scorewhores who get told off for not participating in missions.
Over the loud speaker Trump was campaigning during a match I was in. I was laughing at times but there was also a bunch of other racist comedy bits that was ghey but I stayed in it until the end because I was doing well. I don't know who it was.

Is it possible to mute other players mic's in game?
^Not all headsets do this, but my ps3 compatible headset has separate settings/ 2 separate wheels for game sounds and other players. So muting players' mics is possible that way at least - but it will mute everyone.
I realize this won't help much but just wanted to mention one option out there that enables muting people in game.
Sometimes just kindly asking the player to mute their mic also works, if they have loud tv or music or a fighting significant other in the background... been there, heard all those before in the background.
I remember reading some convo about this on the forums regarding pc's and other platforms, but can't remember where. I'm sure some of those players can help you out with that info when they see this.

On PS3=Yeah. but you must have them on the block list beforehand.
Then they might accidently fall into your lobby in-game. This might be entertaining for the others also, because they can hear you both, but you can't hear one another.
That allows for pure show of fun and gives some real freedom of speech.

It actually really happened... Remember I was super low lev so I was a bronze match... And the paladin was like level 20 with 300 N7 points things... And well I guess he had nothing to lose? So he just had to troll just because I said "Banshees can sync kill you"
