Just started playing again after a long break. I'm an average player at best but the lag is making games especially hard. I discovered MEPinger courtesy of one of the threads here - http://forum.bioware...tility-pc-v111/ so started tracking my connections. I'm mostly get stuck with Russians and Europeans which is tough given they're on the other side of the planet, but since there's no way to filter by location or latency or anything you'd expect in an actual PC game it's like it or lump it.

Here's results from recent matches:

Hungary - 393ms

Finland - 346ms

Sweden - 384ms

Poland - Not Available

US - 308ms

UK - Not Available

Self Hosting - 35ms

(This was a bronze match with 1 Russian teammate. Thought it lagged a little still, but nothing compared to what I'm used to!!! May decrease my graphics if I can.)

Okay running at closer to 640x480 :P  seems to smooth things a bit, but the ping is still horrific. The more diverse your teammates the worse the ping though right? So if I host but have 3 teammates from 3 different continents my lag will still be bad correct?

Are you in Australia? If you are, there's your problem. As an Australian living in Europe, I can safely tell you that online gaming on an Australian connection is a bad idea.

I tried the pinger way back in the day, but a lot of the hosts wouldn't respond to requests so I just had to guess based on location of the IP.  My connection to continental Europe wasn't that great.  To Oceania or Asia was pretty bad.  Even some connections to the western US weren't great.

OP.
Ping is roundtrip including you.
Pinging yourself loops back, and never even reach your provider.
Ping sends ICMP packets which are different than your "normal" tcp / udp packets.
Berlin is x=13000 km away from New York : & since electrons can only move at the speed of light, even "perfect" hw & sw can only
Ping max 85ms (2.x/300 000) between them. Even that assumes that cables are perfectly straight - which they are not. Now that is only "real world" overhead.

So part of that 300ms just confirmed than some people live further from you than the guy next door.

Now, taken the above in mind, If you consistently ping high to the R.o.w. (Rest of world ), chances are that you must first clean in your own backyard - your provider probably also prioritizes local ip traffic. Switch your provider if you wanna 150ms>ping>85ms.

...this post also explains why you should ignore noobs nagging about australian networks - which can only min roundtrip ever at 107ms from Berlin, because that undersea cable snake winds long distances.

At present yes. Other games don't seem to have such a radical issue for ping. Oh don't get me wrong, the ping's still high if I want to play European servers, but Pacific servers are more the 50-200 mark. That's far more playable than the European 400ms. Is part of the problem that the ME3 crowd is comprised almost exclusively of Americans and Europeans rather than Asia and Pacific players?

Hey, I think me and my friend played with you recently. Would be the Finland one. Silver match against Geth on Condor. We were the ADHD Drells running all over the place (put on adrenaline modules for lols, sorry if annoying). I was the Infiltrator.

I do recall seeing your character (Batarian) go rubberbanding once or twice. No wonder if you had that high of a ping

I don't remember the match but yes I've been playing a Batarian Sentinel, and yes I've gone rubberbanding at least once or twice!!!   The most annoying instances are when I run away from an enemy then rubberband back and turn into a corpse     Given my ping is so high I'm figuring the submission net will equalise the odds a little by freezing low levels foes. I'm presently trying an alternative stasis build but feel a bit more fragile than the Batarian.

Don't know about PC, but on PS3 it does look like most players are in the US or Europe. I'm sure there are some more specific stats somewhere, but at least that's based on what I've read and experienced during the past year or so.

During our European morning & daytime, we often get some Asian players in our lobby, and I've spent some games on some Japanese hosts  but even they vary just like everywhere else -- sometimes the lag is horribad, sometimes it is all smooth.

I've heard some further eastern players had ok connections to Finland and Norway on certain occasions, they seemed happy. So, not impossible.

Oh yeah, and my lagwise worst games either way have usually been with Russian players (since you mentioned that). But I swear it has nothing to do with our not-so-friendly past. =]
