Really? This is a thread? Because I'd prefer this not to be a option in the next ME game...

It would probably be impossible implement. It's difficult enough for the writers to account for varying relationship states while having to work with word budgets, and that is only between two characters. Then there are the devs who have to design multiple romance cutscenes to account for whether it's just two people in the scene, or three or four. Every other character you throw into that mix is just going to complicate things further and strain those already limited resources.

The only way this could ever be a thing in game is if it's a set protagonist with pre-existing relationships, where the devs don't have to worry about variables and alternate LIs, or if it's a relationship involving NPCs that the protagonist isn't a part of. Or playing it like they did with Isabela or Zevran, where it's just implied without characters really talking about it.

I believe Bioware said the only way they figured they could do it without it being as big a programming nightmare it would be is if the LI is already in a relationship with another character, and the LI and their LI welcome the protagonist to become a participant. That way even if they aren't romanced, the two NPCs are still in a relationship so most of the work is still used.

Or procedurally generated dialogue.

This is under the assumption of a three (or more)-way. Polyamory is, per the Merriam-Webster, the state or practice of having more than one open romantic relationship at a time. While at most it could be a multi-way, the ending could just as well be different, coupled sex scenes. And while in real life more than two partners is possible, BW could just as easily cut it short to just two LI's. This would make programming reasonable and, more so, they could make it so that one of the LI's accepts open relationships but doesn't practice polyamory personally, making the PC and the other LI being the only practitioners of polyamory.

It doesn't have to be a group relationship. There are several types of polyamory. To implement polyamory they can just include the ability to have multiple active romances that don't cancel each other out. If I could do it in ME3 using Save Editor (had sex with Liara but woke up with Tali), I'm sure Bioware can do it even better. They can already acknowledge your multiple current and past love interests (like Tali-Ashley or Tali-Liara scene in the start of Geth Dreadnought mission in ME3) but instead of writing jealous dialogues they can switch it around and write friendly/flirty dialogues for certain combo of LIs. And deciding who should be polyamorous or monogamous can be executed the same way they did with homosexuality, bisexuality and heterosexuality. So no, polyamory is no more dfficult to implement than doing exactly the same amount of work they did in ME3.

And for those not wanting polyamory in their game:  you can easily solve this by romancing just one character at a time.

Would love to see that, as long as it's not guy on guy crap. Personally, I think it would be great if you had the option to cut all male gay characters from being a part of the game.

Why is that bothering you? Don't romance gay folks and you'll be okay.

Me too. I fear my character will turn bi-curious if any of them comes anywhere near him.

But lezzies are hot, even though we'll never get anything from them.

Isn't the option to turn it off is basically not choosing that option? Just like in real life, there is that option to go after the guy, but you just don't do it, unless you want, I'm not here to judge.

They went all out in Fallout 4 Far Harbor, going from having sex with robots that look like humans to having sex with a human that looks like robot.

I wouldn't mind if Mass Effect has some of these funny moments.

This would bring us back to the problem people had with DA2's approach to sexuality, though. I don't think making everybody poly at the player's discretion would go over any better that making everybody bi did.

That would be hilarious in ME3.

Cut all the gay male characters from the game -> can't leave the Normandy anymore because the shuttle pilot does't exist anymore.

Well then, the shuttle now is ought to be used for free-for-all orgies with Shep, Miranda, Liara, EDI (specially EDI) and Kaidan (he's not gay so doesn't count).

This is going to be one short Reaper War (good news: no Starbrat)...

Given current population trends, that's an argument in favor of homosexuality.
