Recently I was looking at some old sci-fi comics, they are so fascinating and the hand drawn sequences can emotionally deliver much more than computer animated cutscene.

In my opinion a hand drawn face can express better a feeling, like anger, frustration, joy, surprise, so I wonder if MEA series could go for a completely change of style and opt for a hand drawn story telling, like the old comics....I know, it has been done with ME  intro. I think it is so interesting that could be fully extended tot he Whole game and substitute the animated scenes.

A black and white style could be even more striking, but is just my taste..anyway, my idea is to focus on the stronger capability of hand made draws to deliver in terms of  emotions.

What do you think?

No. The style they have now feels appropriate. I don't want the game looking cartoony.

Changing the art style now could be too jarring for people.

Plus at the moment the industry is going towards the more cartoon art style so people would just accuse Bioware of being unoriginal and pandering to what is popular at the time.

No. I want a video game, not a cartoon or a comic book.

I like cut scenes. Always liked them, even those blotchy three pixel horrors of the past.

No. If you really want that, there are other games in the market that do it. Go play them. That's what I do wen I want to see something different.

I agree, OP. I hate it when my video games are too video game-y.

That would get old realllll quick.  For the first hour you'd be like 'oh my god this is amazing', then boom, totally over it already.

The only wish I've got towards the cutscenes - I like ones on the game engine (ME1- like ones) back. Seeing the Shepard with ubiquitous M8 Avenger instead of his current gun is ... meh at best :-))

ME should stay how it is. Also I'm sure they have done wonderful progress with expressions and modelling  ^^ (I cross my fingers for the hair... !)

Edit :  btw if you like the comics artstyle on games, you can try to play "the wolf among us" for example, it's an adapation of the comics "Fables".

When I want to see comics illustration style I, surprisingly, open and read comics.

Why do you think the over-expressive aesthetics of comic books complement Mass Effect's art direction more than the existing in-game cutscenes?

Switching between 3d and 2d would destroy the immersion really quick, imo.

As much as making MEA a manga would be hilarious, it would be stifling other aspects of RPG gaming in ME which still need to be addressed.

No. Mass Effect is a cinematic experience. BioWare has long since been making their name by offering cinematic RPG experiences. Why would we want them to go away from that? Might as well set the IP on fire throw it out the window. The series would lose those fans who are still holding on to see if it can be reclaimed from the technicolor explosion of 2012.

Edit: Ugh. Stupid machine.... I mean, iPad!

A thread on Mass Effect Andromeda's cutscenes being done in a hand drawn, cartoon style?

ah.gif for the originality.

Removing the cutscenes is only valuable if you're removing the non-interactive content. Simply replacing it with different non-interactive content doesn't gain us anything.

I think we should wait until at the very least we've seen Andromeda's faces in action. Word on the street is the improvement of facial animation was a big focus for the team.

Mass Effect should stay with the visual style they got, which is already a fairly strong one.

It would also be too jarring for the game's entire aesthetic to change every single time there is a cutscene. There is a lot of cutscenes in a Mass Effect game.

I agree with most of the critics, but I still think that a well hand drawn face and landscape can convey a lot. Sometimes in ME the phatos of some scenes is undermined by the coldness of a facial expression...the emotion of a scene is there but the character does not convey and match it....this breaks the spell...I hope MAA will be able to achieve this very tricky and difficult task....hand drawn technique is a simpler and old , but I think still very effective...

Andromeda is no Mass effect, (the developers has been clear with this) is a new game, so we should do the effort to think differently.

Of course is a fine balance between new and old....I hope it will lean more toward the new...otherwise is  MA4.
