I've never picked up on this, but I only noticed this because I recently made the girlfriend sit through Aliens.  
 
Is this a direct nod to the film, or is "mom and pop" a common sci-fi thing? This was one of the locations on the planet Rayingri, during the quest UNC: Geth Incursions.

"Mom and Pop operations" is not a sci-fi expression, it's just a common expression that means "Independent business owners, typically from a single family with multiple members associated with the business."

 

It also often has a rustic connotation, implying that the business operates outside of mainstream corridors.
