I recently played through the "Here Lies the Abyss" quest in DAI, and Hawke had some pretty negative opinions about the Grey Wardens. The thing is, I hardly remember the Wardens having any major role in DAII. I remember Alistair showing up at one point to help fight someone (the qunari, I think?), and he gave Hawke an amulet that belonged to the Hero of Ferelden, but other than that I'm drawing a complete blank.

It made for a very jarring experience hearing DAI Hawke being so anti-Warden, so I was wondering if there's another incident I forgot that could explain her attitude. I know it's possible for one of the twins to become a Warden, but that didn't happen in my game; does that storyline end poorly for Bethany/Carver? Is it all because of Anders (my Hawke spared his life, but they parted on bad terms)? I didn't play any of the DLCs, so is there something else (besides Corypheus) that I missed there?

If Bethany is a warden she's unhappy, she's much happier in the Circle.  Carver however thrives in the Wardens, finally finding a place he feels he belongs in.

I assumed that in the gap between the end of DA2 and getting to Skyhold, Hawke had been investigating them and it was in that time that he/she formed many of their opinions.

Legacy plays a big part in this.  If you have DA2 it'd be worth buying Legacy as it's a great DLC and puts a lot of this in perspective.  It was a group of rogue Wardens who wanted to wake Corypheus, and it was Hawke who had to 'kill' him.  And that was after being hunted down by the Carta, who themselves were controlled by Cory, and then locked in an underground Grey Warden fortress with a bunch of darkspawn and no way out.

Not surprised Hawke is bitter about that tbh.

Therefore important to play with the Legacy. (It's a shame that it was a DLC, not the part of the basic game ...)

(Carver happy as templar too.  He is very proud that his Father named him after a good templar.)

It has to do with Hawke's family backstory I think, which you find out in Legacy. The Wardens used Hawke's father to perform blood magic for them (to imprison Corypheus), and threatened his mother if he didn't agree.

In DAI Hawke is understandably bitter about the Wardens and their use of blood magic. But actually, those angry lines depend on responses your Inquisitor picks during that quest. If your Quizzy makes the right dialogue choices Hawke will be either more understanding, or opposed to the Wardens.

Forgot about that.  Oops.

An interesting question, because in exchange for his blood, Malcolm received freedom from the wardens, and an opportunity for a new life with his wife and children.

I think the main reason was the wardens' unscrupulousness (using demons, "the end justifies the means" etc.). This led to easy to let themselves be influenced by Corypheus.

(I should add: two of my favorite Hawkes are blood mage, who know the blood magic's danger, but use it...)

Yeah I imagine Hawke would have a love/hate relationship with the Wardens...because on the one hand, they have helped him and his family more than once (and might have saved Beth/Carver), but it always comes at a price. So my favorite combo is to have Hawke paired up with Stroud in DAI, and their arguing makes sense and seems personal. But in the end, Hawke still volunteers to stay behind despite everything.

Yup, I also imagine the encounter with Cory being the point where mage Hawke would struggle with the idea of becoming a blood mage or not, after having found out about Malcolm and unlocking Cory's prison. And if doing Legacy in act 2 right after Leandra dies, it seems more dramatic.

Grey Warden Behany suffers for a while when she is a warden. But when she comes back on act 3 she is a lot tougher and emboldened. She berates you heavily if you sided with Templars and can't wait to kill Templars if you sided with mages.

Thanks for the info, guys! I figured it probably had something to do with the Corypheus DLC since that seems to be way more important to DAI and Thedas in general than anything that happened in the base game.

It's cool that Hawke's responses change based on the Inquisitor's choices, but my Inquisitor is a huge Hero of Ferelden fangirl so it's understandable her pro-Warden stance rubbed Hawke the wrong way. Maybe I'll eventually do another Inquisition playthrough with an anti-Warden Inquisitor to see the differences.

I probably won't pick Legacy up since I didn't enjoy DAII's gameplay, but at least I have some more background now. A lot of Varric's remarks make more sense, too.

It's more that Hawke has become adamantly anti-blood magic, and to hear that the Wardens are sacrificing their own members to summon demons is galling to Hawke even if it wasn't some trick by Corypheus. (Though the actions of Janeka, Larius and Anders probably hasn't done anything to endear the order to the Champion.)

Are you on PC?  You could install the Story Mode mod that makes easy mode 3 times easier.  You just breeze through the fights and enjoy the story.

Or of course you could watch it on Youtube, it's worth it.  :)

It's not that I find the game difficult, I just don't care for the "faster-paced" combat. That and the lack of tac cam means it's a recipe for motion sickness, unfortunately. I couldn't play for more than 45 minutes at a time without feeling ill (which is better than Skyrim where 30 min is my limit).  :(

I didn't think of Youtube, though, I might check that out. :)

Ah I can understand that, I get motion sick too.  DA2 is easier for me either as an archer rogue or mage as it lets me stand back and not move the camera back too much.

I can see where that would help. My Hawke was a dual-wield rogue, and I'd have to close my eyes every time I used backstab. :pinched:
