I was thinking DW Rogue, Tank, and a Mage.

I think I would start on normal in the Hinterlands.

Any other lineups that make sense?

What do you think?

You can have any party you like, all mages, all rouges, all warriors, no party, whatever you want. Anything makes sense to whomever did it but, yeah that has all you need for anything. mage for Veilfire and energizing, rogue for locks and warrior for bashing.

As for combat well, Hinterlands on normal isn't enough of a fight to concern me as to who, if any party I have there.

You absolutely can do a 3 character party of that composition.

But why? Some kind of RP goal, or what? Or do you want to slow down leveling up? There's an easier way to do that, if that is what you want.

The drawbacks to having only 3 in the party are:

  1. Less damage output, considering the party as a whole
  2. XP earned more slowly (in real time)
  3. Fewer focus abilities on call
  4. Fewer tonic and grenade slots, considering the party as a whole
  5. Fewer benefits from party-wide effects, such as Artificer's Opportunity Knocks passive
  6. If your mage goes down during combat, no one else gets Barrier (that's a drawback of any 1 mage party, of course)
  7. Possibly the biggest drawback of all: less party banter, you'll only have one pair to experience, instead of three, and none of the three-part banters that don't include the IQ

There are some advantages:

  1. Fewer thirsty companions to guzzle down your shared health potions
  2. Fewer inventories and loadouts to have to waste time on

I generally take a warrior, an archer, and two mages. I set up one mage to spam Barrier and do other support things, like Revival. The other mage is pure damage. I set up the warrior to spam Horn of Valor/Fortifying Blast to give the whole party guard.

I'll mix it up sometimes and have two warriors or two rogues, depending on what my IQ is, but unless I'm specifically going for a solo or duo run, I always run with a full party of four.

I'm really rusty on playing.  They said that Shadow Strike was too hit or miss but I haven't tried it myself.  I remember liking flank attack.

Right answer in the wrong thread, maybe?

You could have a party of just yourself or all slots taken up. As previously mentioned there are probably more cons than pros to having less party members though.
