I enjoyed sniper rifles in every game of the trilogy, having their own, unique charm in each game. Mass Effect 1's sniper rifle gameplay was actually quite good in my honest opinion, especially after you got the best one in the game; almost endless one shot kills in small brackets of time, also making you feel like a total badass. The slow down effect that Infiltrators had also made the sniper rifle a much more enjoyable weapon to use, most especially in 2 and 3, helping you to pull off those amazingly precise shots in the short-range combat encounters that you regularly face.

I, personally, preferred the lack of a thermal clip in my sniper rifles. Because of the thermal clip, sniper rifles were less enjoyable to use in 2 and 3, running out of ammo on a constant basis, although I found that it did become far better when I ascended to a higher level (and had an ammo enhancement ability, they which could also improve the weapon's ammo capacity). 3 had the greatest variety of sniper rifles, and some, like the Javelin, felt absolutely incredible to use, which was a big bonus for the sniper rifles in that game.

I feel as though Andromeda could bring fourth some of the most enjoyable experiences that we've yet seen with sniper rifles, most especially due to the scale of the maps that we will be exploring. I can only assume that there will be many combat scenarios when out adventuring on a planet's surface, and being able to hop out of your Mako in order to set up a nice and cozy little spot camping spot so that you can line up that perfect shot and take the kill(s) will feel both satisfying, and clever. That was also a nice feature in Mass Effect 1, being able to fire on your enemies from hundreds of metres away, even if there weren't a huge plethora of opportunities to do it; I am looking forward to being able to do it again.

Well, if the M40's a decent gauge for a sniper rifle, they're only capable of ~800 yds (a quarter-mile), though no doubt on great days better rifles could reach farther to like 1200 yds.

It's possible i'm remembering the distances wrong. Either way, if the (max) zoom was at 200 yds for a target, we could have done just as well with assault rilfes with scopes. The M16's capable of hitting a target 601 yds away.

Hmm, wonder if there's a dev post which mentions the dimensions of some of the maps to provide some clarification.

Just to check my memory, I loaded up ME1 today and found an old save made just at the start of Therum.  Scoped out some of my regular sniper shots... my average is about 192 m (209 yds).  One of the longer shot I do scopes in at 377 m (412 yds) - which is longer than I thought it was.  I tried taking an even longer shot that I haven't tried before, but scope would not show a reading for it and armature would not fire back at all.  After about 20 shots I figured that it just wasn't taking any damage at that distance at all.  I suspect the longest reading you can get from the scope might be somewhere around 385 m.  I'm still looking for a save made during Feros, so I can scope out my long shot there (which I do think is a little longer than the 377 m one on Therum).

Oh cool! I was kind figuring they were more than 200m but i never checked the scope read and really am not good about range estimation. This is pretty cool of the devs for at least trying to get the realism right for the weapons, even if they had to shorten the distance a bit.

If the armature's at the distance i'm expecting, i think i wondered the same when playing against them until i got up close and saw they were taking damage, though at a reduced rate. My guess is outside the effective range specified by the scope, weapon damage/accuracy's reduced significantly.

Been spending some time in ME1 checking sniper shots... found one that I do on Binthu that scopes in at 399 m (firing at the turrets on Facility #1).  I'm pretty sure that is the absolute longest shot.  I tried moving out further and then the scope stops giving a reading and, again, the turret will not fire back and it appears as though the turret doesn't take any damage at all.

You know, that's pretty awesome. They put in a lot more effort than expected on the ranges. If MEA is as open as they're making it, our sniper rifles are going to get some work.

Sniper rifle make me happy in the trilogy. I hate the shaking in the first game but there's something immensely satisfying when you successfully shoot Tresher Maws and Geth Colossus down. In ME2, I hate how the weapon system only runs on "very effective/effective" like Pokemon, but I do love Viper and later Widow. Neither of which is useful against the Proto-Reaper. In ME3, its pure love... exploding heads while you sit back and watch your squadmates fight. Making all your heatsink matter and punishing when you miss.

I hate magical assault rifles. It was a leftover from Starship Troopers that were made into this game and supposedly default weapon for all. I hate the word "default".

You like to savor the last shot before popping the heat sink, huh...

I doubt they'll be any different than they were in ME1-3. I loved Sniper Rifles, playing as some dude half a mile away from combat doesn't sound terribly interesting to me. Don't fix what isn't broken.

I only used them in multiplayer. Black Widow one-shot headshot. I think the only difference between Black Widow and the Widow was the clip size.

The thing is giving those of us who want some really long-shot challenges in the game doesn't have to take away from the closer in use of a sniper rifle that was more the norm, especially in ME2 and ME3.

Well with MEA being open world I expect sniping to be comparable with FO4/3, so you should be able to (sometimes) actually do some long shotting like that. But I wouldn't expect the whole spotter/sniper dynamic and real sniping. It would be a whole new mechanic that would only be available to characters that use snipers.

Pretty much,

Plus we need some more infiltrator dominance ;)

Sniper Rifles were my least favorite weapon in the ME Trilogy, I avoided using them throughout every playthrough after my initial use of them per each game. It was for me a combination of things that just never sat well with me but over all I felt they were kind of out of place. When I think Sniper, I envision a guy/gal who is no where near the battlefield, and is in fact not in a fire fight with the enemy, but rather a lone soldier maybe a spotter and his gun waiting in hiding half a mile away from the target setting up for the perfect shot. ME use of sniper rifles are by and far away from my expectations, so my question is.

Do you think this go around they'll exclude Sniper Rifles or rework them to be the long range 1 shot 1 kill weapons modern Snipers are usually famed to be?

By the by I did use them a lot more though in multiplayer in ME3 namely the Indra, loved that gun on my Geth Engineer for some reason.

Yes, the Indra is a lovely weapon but poor in the damage department. I moved on to the N7 Crusader.

Rather enjoy the variety of sniper rifles seen in ME3; from Black Widow, Javelin, and mantis damage dealers to the Viper for ammo DPS models. I would prefer not to see drunken aiming from ME1 return, but I also enjoyed snipers in all of the games.

I'd assume that's the reticle wandering, which it did a bit excessively in ME1

Excessive... Hmm.

I sadly no longer have access to this PSO-1 replica, but I could even argue that it was rather inconsistent instead of just rubbish, and that the aim float was fine during some situations, but horribly exaggerated during others. Sadly, I can't really test it out myself right now, and it feels quite different to aim through a scope and iron sights.

Well... that's uh... that's your experience.

I, personally, always loved Sniper Rifles in Mass Effect. They were definitively a little awkward in ME1, sure. Most enemies were so tanky on higher difficulties, you were better off using your pistol. The painful delay when activating Assassination didn't help.

But by Mass Effect 2, it was arguably perfect. They were powerful, satisfying weapons, without being (Widow notwithstanding) over-powered. Ammo capacity was limited, which kept it balanced, without being annoying.  They're just all-around badass guns, that are basically the bread and butter of a typical Infiltrator.

I don't believe they changed much (if at all) by ME3, apart from the new shield gate mechanic. But hey, if that wasn't implemented, life would be too easy.

Anyway, the moral of the story is, Sniper Rifles are great as they are now and Bioware shouldn't do anything drastic to them.

One of my favorite classes in The trilogy was The infiltrater. I really utilized the sniper rifle ! My only issue was that, in most cases, combat was relatively close range. With that being said I still enjoyed the sniper rifle ! My hope is there may be some opportunities for solo missions where stealth and a sniper rifle can be utilized more . Or a grander scale on which we get to have combat.

Also remember using my Infiltrator with a sniper rifle taking out every turret, Geth, and Thresher Maw outside of the Mako. Once aiming became steady, this was fun, at least for one playthrough.

I really hope the Kishok (or a similar sniper) will be back in Andromeda. There is nothing better than sending a phantom straight to the moon with a well placed headshot.

Drunken aiming helps a bit with balance so it takes a little bit extra effort to kill things at long range.  Then again, ME1 had several other relatively typical shooter mechanics that ended up being cut for the later installments when the combat system was overhauled.

You know what we never see in these games? Paintball guns. Now paintball SNIPERS? Giving enemies a paint job from afar? That. Would. Be. AWESUMMALUMMA.
