Bioware excels at spicing up its games with PC-on-NPC romances, but those subplots tend to have straightforward and uniform arcs. The PC woos the NPC and helps the NPC with a private quest until the two characters embark on a monogamous affair, which fails to develop into anything more complex. Seldom can the couple relocate, marry, or procreate. The potential for such plot developments would entail more writing and voice-acting, but it would also make the characters more credible and the story as a whole more immersive. Ultimately, multifaceted romantic subplots could represent the single greatest step away from mindless fetch-quests.
Make the romantic subplots less linear and predictable.

While I would enjoy more romance content in general, I don't really see them going too far down this road. DAI allows two marriages, but only two, and they are in a DLC, not the main game. In addition, these romance are, and likely always will be, optional content, so they probably will not allocate too many resources to them because of that.

I rather they dont bother on romance, instead make a overall better game. They have been trying to please everybody and consequence of that have pleased no one.

I love romantic subplots, but I like steamy story lines. I actually would love to see them do a spicey offshoot, 'Dragon Age Romance' and give you different romance scenarios for each pairing of all the characters. After seeing all those DA fan made Youtube videos, I think a little adult contend video gaming could be intriguing. ![]()

Make the romance the center point to the story, action/romance, romance/ comedy, but with player interaction that picks who is going to get together and how deeply. Kind of like simulated romance with DA characters, story lines and battle scenes. The CGI in DA is amazing, the romance scenes are phenomenal but too short and sparse compared to the hours of game play. Kind of like reading a romance novel, but playing it instead. I don't know if that makes sense, of if something like that has been done before or talk about and discarded. I'm a sucker for a good, spicey romance story, I think it would be cool to be able to mix and match DA characters like that. Kind of like video game 'shipping' I guess it's called??

I'd love to see more romance scenes scattered throughout the game, honestly.
I get it, Dragon Age is not a "fantasy dating simulator", but the emotional attachment to NPCs is a pretty important element of the story, that lets you sympathize with the main character.
In Inquisition, it feels like the "romantic" moments are very few and it takes ages to go from one scene to the next, with very little interaction in between.
(Not to mention, if you are romancing Solas, all you can do is just yell: "TELL ME ABOUT CORYPHEUS" at him. At least other romances get kisses...
I really miss the "go to camp" option of Origins: it was a cool way to let you interact with NPCs.
I do not miss the gifts though. Those felt awkward.

I'd be willing to drop half the quests to extend the romantic cutscenes, to me the cutscenes are better than the game play. I love the character development, the art work, the voice acting. You folks have done such a good job with all of that it's a shame you haven't gotten into DA-CGI romance movies. I don't know much about the kind of programming that goes into cutscenes vs game play movements, but if there was ever an option to have more cutscenes over optional quests, I'd definately go with the cutscenes.

I romanced Solas the first time, so, lol. How is talking about Corypheus not sexy? ![]()
I like the scenes to be more scattered too. That's one of the reasons I favor Cullen's romance in DAI. I felt like his romance moved along more with the game than others that can happen mostly all at once. The pacing and content felt proportioned to the story -- which already seemed to have strange pacing to me.
I don't necessarily miss the camp, though. The "surprise attack romance scenes!" when I just stepped in for a quick second to sell stuff or swap people always felt startling. This is especially true when going back to camp after meeting Alistair's sister and he's suddenly "We'll bang now, ok?" I'm just like, weird timing dude. ![]()

I no longer care about romance in video games. If you are going to give us romances, make that romance a big part of the story. As it stands now, romance in Bioware games is nothing but some flirt options, and a sex scene of some-kind. I want a love story like the one between Darth Revan and Bastila. A romance that is at the center of the entire story like in Starcraft.

I'd say it depends on the romance. For instance, the fast pace of the Dorian romance seems deliberate, given his history, and is actually mentioned if you take an alternate path.

Yeah, I know. I love Dorian and his romance is of course another favorite.
I just liked the general structuring of Cullen's romance more because it was different than the others. Blackwall's is similar, I suppose. Now that I think about it. (Still like Cullen's more.)
They all obviously have more content than Solas, but I still enjoy his because of, you know, stuff.
I haven't romanced Sera and Josephine yet, but soon.

Can the romance be a villain? Solas is a villain romance, but he turns hostile only in the last DLC. What if the next DA game had you romance a character at the beginning only to find that he is a villain later in the game. The two of you still have feelings but would head towards a final showdown?

Perhaps they already intended such with Solas, since it's entirely possible to not end the relationship (I didn't) even in the dlc. But who knows. They've been playing with this idea to an extent, at least in terms of loving a potential "antagonist." Morrigan, Anders (Isabela too?) and now Solas. Although Morrigan isn't as heavy-handed and you can't actually kill her. It seems with each game such romantic conflicts intensify.
Speaking from experience, I'm not sure how much more of that I could take.
I did Anders and Solas the first time through of each game and, well, damn. (And then there was something slightly similar for me in ME3.) I kind of expect it to happen again in future games, honestly. I apparently have excellent taste. ![]()

Cassandra's felt a little fast too -- although part of this for both is up to player, as it involves completing quests. Iron Bull is maybe a little better in pacing/whatnot, but his romance is very different in the first place.

Dorians romance was cute but I think I like him ending up with Ironbull better because it gives humorous party banter. Cassandra's was ok but it lacked the emotion that Dorian and Cullen's had. Ironbull's was ok but I had trouble considering it a romance, it felt more like and obligation on Bull's part. Josephine's was cute, very clean and very cute. A little too tame for me but I did enjoy the duel scene.
I won't be doing Blackwall or Sera. I find Blackwall icky, I don't care how good I hear that romance is, I don't like him. Sera, I LOVE Sera...but like a daughter or a niece or something, I can't go through with that romance either, I have seen how it went on Youtube though. It was cute. Cullen's is my favorite, I just can't resist asking him about his templar vows every time I've played it, or the cute first kiss scene or that smile he throws at you just as he turns away during the other kiss scene. The lake scene was sweet and the hug he gives you at the end after you defeat Corypheus...awww. I liked his desk clearing moment also (could've been longer though) it was another time he had a faint smile that I liked. All in all, I would say Dorian and Cullen's were the best mainly because of the voice acting and lines. Both men did an amazing job puting so much emotion in their lines, I think my main complaint is with Cullen. After the wicked grace game you tease him and he says he didn't need to embaress himself in front of YOU. The 'You' felt more like an insult and I didn't get the opportunity to tell him he had NOTHING to be embarrassed for. ![]()

Do you always have to find someone to romance in the game? Maybe the next DA game can have you be in love with someone at the start but have to find them or maintain the relationship. The game can let you create her appearance and personality.

I’ve always seen romance in BioWare games as a fun bonus – they make lovable characters and then let us love them.
To “create our own romance” would defeat the purpose of what they do, or try to do.

I don’t like Dorian and Iron Bull together. Haha, that might be because I’m possessive and I’d rather Dorian not be with anyone other than the Inquisitor, or that I’m not a big fan of Iron Bull. Probably both, actually.
I think I agree with you on Cassandra’s and Irons Bull’s romances. With Iron Bull I feel like all I really got was a kinky Inquisitor. But, this is all subjective. I really wanted to enjoy Cassandra’s romance and maybe it suffered because of that. (A part of me might’ve seen her as an “Aveline substitute” so I'm sure that didn't help.) I plan to play it again and see how I feel. I found Blackwall’s romance to be sufficiently satisfying. Not a favorite, but it “felt complete” for lack of a better phrase.
Perhaps something that Cullen has over the other romances is familiarity. For those that started the series at Origins he isn’t new, he’s someone we’ve met and come to know, watch change and struggle. We know his story because we’ve been witnesses to it and still are. Romance almost seems like a natural step at this point (and Maker knows so many of the fans wanted to.
) So maybe because of that, too, is why I’m more partial to his romance. I mean, my first Warden was a female elven mage…
“I don’t need help embarrassing myself in front of you.” I like that moment. He just epically lost to Josephine, it’s understandable that he’d be embarrassed – he’s just unaware that the Inquisitor might find it endearing. ![]()

When I've played, I always make sure I get a high approval from Dorian and Bull, which I suppose is good because then Bull doesn't betray the Inquistor in Trespasser.(I've only completed one Trespasser playthrough and I loved Bull turning down the Quinari leader woman(I forget what she's called but I think it begins with "V".) What I do love about Dorian and Bull is that you have 2 feuding races, on one side sweet, vulnerable, yet cocky and arrogant Dorian and big, tough, yet protective and sensitive Bull, hashing out their differences with insulting, yet humorous quips. Dorian is always testy, but you start to hear an affection grow and Bull's replies are a combination of 'in your face' amusement and prideful, teasing affection. I find that adorable. ![]()
The familiarity with Cullen is a DEFINITE plus. You know what the poor guy has gone through! He started off as a sweet be-smitten Templar who was crushing on one of his charges and then things started going so bad, so fast. His entire world was devastated, first in the tower, then in Kirwall, then the Conclave and Haven...You get to feel like, 'Jeesh! Give this poor guy a break!', he's had enough problems. His character caught my attention in Origins, I felt so bad for him. Then in DA2, I found myself sick with worry for him, especially during the mage Templar battle. Every time a Templar fell, I was worried it might be Cullen and I was like, "Nooooo! Not Cullen!" and I didn't want to see his character turn into a bitter, frightened tyrant, I was relieved to see him still able to hang onto his humanity and hope at the end. When my daughter's friend told Cullen was a romanceable character in DAI, I had to check it out, what can I say. I've found him to be one of the most compelling characters in the story, with the most tragic past and I don't believe Varric's philosophy the the hero has to suffer all the time to make up a good tale. I'm sorry, there comes a time when you draw the line, or walk away. A constant barrage of horrible events takes it's toll on a story and I loose interest, so it does seem fitting Cullen should end up in a romance, I was glad to see it. ![]()
I agree that moment was endearing, but the way his voice tone went down when he 'you' it sounded more like he was directing disgust at the Inquisitor, the tone should have gone up, I think, anyway. And I really think there should've been an option where the Inquisitor looks him up and down, wiggles her eyebrows, nibbles her bottom lip and says lasciviously, 'Oh honey, you had absolutely nothing to be ashamed of! The blush in your cheeks was cute though and so was your red face!" ![]()
