Because right now the bar is set with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Hearts of Stone, and Blood and Wine.

After playing Blood and Wine, its crazy to think about how Bioware got so soundly thrashed in most facets of game direction, with CD Projeckt RED also giving Bethesda a whipping as well. It is also probably the first game to not settle and have their cake and eat it too with open world design and strong RPG storytelling.

And writing too. Its quest design, its characterization, and how it implements both quest and character completely and utterly destroy Bioware's use of "talking codex entries", and how Bioware handles character quests. CD Projeckt RED's writing also takes risks, and routinely surprise the player in a way that is organic and well done, and grounds its writing in the human condition, foregoing most of the hero of destiny RPG writing. Even hilarious quests sometimes have dark or sad tones, for example "Big Game Hunter" in Blood and Wine. And the Witcher 3 organically weaves secondary and even side quests to the main plot, both weaving out and back in (although ME3 and really DA2 does this as well). In most Bioware games, the main plot and its side quests are packaged separately.

What caused CDPR to take the crown? Because they were willing to work outside of formula and take risks, and they were allowed to as well. This is the problem with Bioware (and Bethesda). They are stuck with doing the same things over and over, and when they break out and do something different, the fanbase is divided, causing them to go back to basics and do the same thing over again.

It wasn't ME3 or even DA2 that caused them to lose the crown, but DAI. DAI played it safe, because Bioware was too scared to keep evolving in fear of its fanbase. In fact DAI is a step back in story and quest implementation, of originality, of characters taking part of the plot, and the return of those god awful talking codex entries. With that and its clear main plot and exploration segregation, its no wonder CD Projeckt RED dethroned them.

Look at Telltale. They released The Walking Dead to many awards and acclaim as well as sales. In reality, it was a deeply flawed game with weak mechanics and dumbed down gameplay, as well as with glaring technical issues. Instead of the gaming press pointing these flaws out and telling them that they need improvement, they were showered with GOTY awards. So Telltale kept doing the same thing, making the same game, using the same engine. Result: Their sales decline. Enter DONTNOD Entertainment. A near bankrupt company expanded on Telltales formula while adding elements from other successful games, and made a very risky story that dealt with real world issues. Result: This original IP, Life is Strange, outsold Telltales games for Borderlands, Game of Thrones, and Minecraft COMBINED, while being awarded (they even a somewhat of a Peabody Award). The king was dethroned by DONTNOD. How? By evolving the genre and tackling issues games rarely tackle while the "king" did the same thing over and over.

This is what CDPR has done to Bioware. DAO and ME2 were overpraised. The case though is that Bioware did not ignore the flaws, the fans did for the most part. DA2 may have fixed some of DAO's problems but it being rushed out caused new ones. ME3 from top to bottom fixed ME2's problems, but an underdeveloped ending and its risky storytelling caused a backlash (backlash for the former needed to be addressed and was, while the latter, Bioware should have ignored). The reaction to these two games lead Bioware to make DAI, which shared DAO and ME2's problems. And guess what? They are less forgiven now, and will be even less forgiven after The Witcher 3.

What Bioware needs to do is improve side quest integration with the main quest, have characters work organically and not separate from the story, have more info about them come from action and even environmental storytelling instead of the 20 question talking codex entry, have storytelling that takes risks and not try to please everybody. Bioware will regain the throne by going outside its formula because now, the formula is outdated. Its so 2003.

Although I agree with this from a customer point of view, CDPR was on the verge of burning it self out as a company. Not sure how they are fairing now but TW 3 was a heavy project and I think the next game is going to be crucial for their survival as a company and structure. Just because something has success does not mean it will continue in the future, and I doubt ME is ever going to end, at least in the next 5 to 10 years.

So no I am not worry about ME 4, I am a lot more worried about Cyberpunk and other CDPR games.

I don't have any MMO experience. How does MMO combat feel?

I know that threat management is an MMO-derived concept -- which I hate, FWIW -- but that's not DAI-specific.

Games like World of Warcraft actually play quite similar at the core to even Dragon Age Origins, just without the pause. The overall combat also feels faster and more responsive in WoW's case which is something more of Blizzard because it feels that way even compared to BioWare's own ToR.

There are a few differences that don't show up in any Dragon Age game, like having rotations. Since people for high end content want to optimize DPS output, we've figured out the optimal order to use abilities in in order to get that. BioWare's class design in even Inquisition shows they weren't even thinking about that, though.

I don't know about MMOs specifically, but you did mention threat management..  Which is part of the "Trinity" of multiplayer play:  tank, damage, healer (or "barrier" in this case) Maker help you if you try to stray from your assigned role.  All the DA games had this to some degree, but it felt especially rigid in DAI.

This is not strictly speaking true.

Even in WoW after Blizzard decided they wanted hybrid classes to pick one role and stick to it, I can still throw out a few heals as a Protection Paladin(tank spec). Druids can use a cooldown to vastly increase their ability to fulfill off-spec roles.

I'd argue DA2 was the worst because Mages lacked a spec capable of tanking unlike Origins and Inquisition.

Threat management is a thing, but that's always been part of Dragon Age and even Inquisition doesn't really demand you actually do it a whole lot.

Merrill could have a frightening amount of survivability properly built.

Bioware really doesn't have to put out anything above average in MEA since there is zero competition in the Scifi exploration 3rd person shooter RPG market.

But really, mage Hawke and the others in the cast can deal so much damage that it's kind of unnecessary to really tank through. Merrill's really the only one that can be kind of tricky just because of the fact that she can't do healing. In my first playthrough, I was surprised to see what Bethany was like after having the Force Mage spec unlocked along with her elemental and healing powers. Total powerhouse that can crowd control and can keep the rest of the party alive through quite a bit.

Man, i saw threads like these before ME3 and DAI came out. I can bet we'll be seeing these kinds of threads when DA4 gets announced too. Every Bioware game these day is now "How they must become no.1" again for this forum.

What's it like on the Overwatch forums? Admittedly, this is the sole videogame community website that I'm a member of, or at least active in.

Is preatty much the same you have Witcher 3 fanboys poping up saying that the only game ppl should be playing is Witcher 3. It wasnt a surprise on Bethesda forums, but when i saw it on Blizzard forums the opposite type of games, i was just surprise.

Wait, is this crown a metaphor?

Or is it a real thing like the Stanley Cup. Adam Badowski gets to take it home with him for a week, then another employee gets to hold onto it? Now that I think about it, this crown has got to be metaphorical. Bioware losing an actual, physical crown to CD Projeckt would have been all over YouTube. Hell, the Coronation ceremony alone would have gotten at least 50,000 likes.

I haven't seen any posts on the Overwatch forums about The Witcher.

It's mostly complaints about McCree being broken as hell, Widowmaker being OP, and the 20 tick rate thing.

"It's always high noon somewhere in the world."

Ah, you thought you had the play of the game when you managed that triple kill with Reinhardt? Naah, it's gonna be McCree or Bastion! Sometimes Phara. But not you!

I've never been to the Overwatch forums, but it seems to be a huge lapse in logic to troll people there with TW3 given the massive differences between the two games. What do they even have in common other than "press button to hurt your opponents"?

On topic: I'd be happy enough about a game with few cut corners, good PC controls and good support.

Perhaps, that's true. However, the studio did take a negative pounding from their ME3 ending. If anything, the ME studio has something to prove to the magazine critics and to their fans. Plus, it's a AAA title = cost moocho $$$ = which must be recouped + profit = investors are happy.

So, iIf you read the little marketing tease/hype that comes along once in a while,  you'd think mankind invented a FTL drive. Wait until EA's Marketing Juggernaut starts rolling. In full swing, EA will try to make you believe the 2nd coming is around the corner.

In the end, ME:A can be an awesome game and sell well or it can be a mediocre game but still sell well because of marketing. I much prefer the former.

You really shouldn't condemn entire community just because there are trolls and "fanboys" who create threads like this. Every single game has these type of people.

None of those other games come close to any of the Mass Effect games. They aren't in the same ball game, they aren't in the same galaxy, they aren't even in the same universe! I don't know what you're smoking, but keep it away from me!

There is apparently a McCree nerf incoming... maybe I should sign up to the Overwatch forums; I miss the salty, salty tears we used to get on the ME3MP forums whenever something was nerfed.

must make

ME:A is essentially done by now, or at least feature-locked, so this is all idle talk. We can only see if what they deliver is any good.

I bought and tried TW2 and TW3. That franchise just is not for me. DA:I I finished after several tries, it's possibly my least liked Bioware game. I would pick any ME game over any TW game anytime. Nonetheless I'm convinced the ME team did some sniffing around in the concept stage seeing what other teams were creating. Hopefully side quests this time will be more organically connected, like DA2 did it.

There are some people in certain communities who just can't accept that, there game must be the best, nothing else is aloud to touch it and nobody is aloud to say anything negative about it or bring facts that go against there opinion.

This fanbase isn't much better. The constant need to bring real life political issues into discussions about game content. The need to complain and make mountains out of molehills about said content because they can't tell the difference between reality and game.
