I'm trying to figure out if that thing is a river or just a narrow lake.

Probably a river, with the mountains draining into it and then on down the valley.

Definitely lakes. Maybe once was a stream, but there is an ice dam at the bottom of the valley, so thus, a lake.

If you have a whole lot of time (seriously, plan on at least an hour real time just to get to the bottom), you can go see for yourself, although for me the water disappeared when I got there.
