Yeah don't shave your chest. A man should have some chest hair imo, it's more manly.

How tall should he be? Does he need a cleft in this chin? If he doesn't, should he use power tools to create one? How straight should his teeth be? What kind of truck should he drive? How big should it be? Does it have to be diesel? Should all his boots have steel toes, or just the ones he uses during construction projects?

6'2". Not necessarily. Depends on how good a craftsman he is. Real men don't need straight teeth. Not a truck--a tank. A huge tank. It's whatever tanks run on. The entire boot should be steel.

... you could up the odds and say all clothes should be steel ;)

No, I'm just chuckling at the idea that real masculinity goes around trying to conform to some persnickety external standard. If you're with a real man, you won't be wasting time counting chest hairs. :D

... I always interpret 'manly' as 'what i find attractive in a man'... it doesnt make sense otherwise like everyone is different so why should people be literally described as 'not like a man' when theyre obviously a man just because they dont adhere to someones idea of what they find attractive... you know???

Well for me it's different. I'm a bit old fashioned I guess and to me "manly" means when a guy is a bit caveman like. In charge, protective etc.

You're misunderstanding my meaning. It's like the scene from The Matrix:

Neo: "What are you trying to tell me? That I can grow chest hair?"

Morpheus: "No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're manly, you won't have to. "

... it would probably be a little more accurate to describe them as that then... manly literally means 'like a man'... every man is 'like a man' because they are a man... it doesnt matter about what they look like or who they are or what they do and dont like...

... its like cats... just because your pet kitten isnt a tiger doesnt mean its not cat-like...

every cat is cat like and every man is manly you just find some things more attractive than others really :)

This is actually the most accurate thing in this whole discussion. I agree 100%. :)

As far as preferences go, I judge people individually, not based on "types." To me, attractiveness is a case-by-case sort of thing that isn't determined by what general category a person falls under.

Unless they're a neckbeard, in which case no.

I disagree with you Gen. It's a way to describe someone, just like the word "feminine", some women are more feminine than others or "womanly" for that matter, I don't think it's wrong to use those words to describe someone or have them as preferences.

Thank you <3

Me too... but really to me its the personality that matters most... if i like someone physically its a bonus... like a dlc for a computer game... its good if you have it but its optional and you can play the game without it and enjoy it just as much :)

... it isnt wrong to have them as preferences of course not but like... feminine means 'like a female'... if you are a female youre gonna be feminine even if you dont have big breasts and curvy hips... people come in all shapes and sizes after all... i think theres a big difference between being 'like a woman' and 'having attributes commonly/traditionally attributed to and found attractive in women'...

Femininity and masculinity are social constructs based on Western ideals. If you look at other cultures in the world, what it is to be a man (and therefore "manly") isn't necessarily the same as how we view it. Therefore, General is right, because manliness and womanliness are not globally applicable traits and can therefore only be defined as "what men/women are inherently like," which can simply be put as "all men are men and all women are women."

I was almost a sociology major. Then I decided to do something with my life instead. so I became a history major and then dropped out

Memorial Day Nerdfest 2012.  We ran out of swords so Rick held a microphone.  Also there's some weird Photoshop effect applied to this so we look like Borderlands and I don't have the original.  The robot shoulder armor I made out of cardboard pizza boxes.

I drive the biggest diesel truck on the highway, with my lead-foot steel-toe boots.  And if you look closely you can see my chest hair poking out of my shirt.  Outta my way, ants.
