Some of you are really quick to vilify yrael for something she didn't say.
...
Take that first sentence out of context and yes, it does sound a bit silly. However, the point she is quite clearly making is that the Western ideals of masculinity and femininity are not shared around the world, that each culture develops its own sense of masculine/feminine ideals, and that we shouldn't be too quick into assuming that what we individually consider as standards applies all over the world. In other words, the contrary of what you are trying to pin on her.
Remember, this is in reply to the "chest hair are manly" debate. In other words, there is nothing wrong with someone liking that particular trait (or any other), based on a local interpretation of manliness, but to suggest it as an ideal in masculinity in an international forum (such as this one) should be taken with the proviso in mind that this is not an opinion that holds universally.
You will notice that this interpretation tails in quite nicely with GeneralXIV's very well-expressed opinion, with which yrael actually agrees
I would like to apologize for dragging this out yet again, and in particular I ask for onewomanarmy and generalXIV's patience for resuming their previous exchange - I have read it with interest, and found both of your positions perfectly valid.
I just don't think yrael's post deserves this kind of treatment.
Please resume in posting cute and interesting pictures
I'm not vilifying(
) anyone for anything, neither am I trying to "pin" anything on anyone or put words in others mouths. However I do expect people to generally back up their statements with some reason or logic, if they can.
The point is that while western ideals of masculinity or femininity may not be shared per se in other cultures, that in no way implies that masculine and feminine behavior aren't globally applicable traits. They are, in fact very much so. Most cultures generally share similar traits for masculine and feminine behavior as far as I know and it is even more rigid in its social structure in a lot of places compared to the west. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's absent.
Also I do get what she's saying, in fact I said that I agree with that point of hers. However that doesn't mean that parts of her argument aren't seriously flawed, even in context. Also as for this whole debate of hairy chests and legs being manly, it was a joke from my part. If you ask me, real men don't give a **** whether something's labelled "manly" or not and do whatever the **** they want.
@SMR, sorry about derailing this whole thread, so I'm gonna stop now.
you goodie goodies make me sick!Tortoise is just a gentle old soul who wants everyone to have a nice time.
^U old as ....
some nice light from normandy
Game of the day : who are te gals and guys above ?
Your rescuers?
Your rescuers?
nope just there for a catamaran session, enjoying the sea with friends
Even if that sentence is read with 100 other logical sentences it stays silly.
Now, connecting it with the splendid relevation from that other one , I quote : a "cat is a cat" and a "man is a man" reveals the depth of logical deduction skills. Still, it is commendable that you save their bacon, if only out of pure Chivalry, which I sincerely hope.
Sorry uh... just to correct you a little i said that every cat was cat like and every man was manly... which is a fact... my bacon didnt need saving
when someone is arguing that a man isnt man-like because they look a certain way... its the only argument really... a man is so man like they are actually a man!
surprises! ![]()

Hmm, I think the drinking game that I'm going to make up is to take a drink each time someone brings it back up, and two drinks if they do so by mentioning how they've moved on. You people are going to need thicker skin if you're going to make it in the ME:A forum when Andromeda comes out. They eat people alive in there!

Not if I eat them first.
I have yet to run out of pics to post, so here's one from some time before I started dyeing my hair:
Has anyone ever told you your eyebrows look like dangerous weapons? ![]()
(I've had a few tell me my furrowed brow is intimidating. I laugh, but I ponder.)

And just cause staying on topic...

This was taken about 10 years ago. Me and the roommates had a "Warm and Comfy Party" at our place. We got a bunch of red lights and candles, every pillow and comforter in the house, and wore pajamas/etc. Had a bunch of weed, wine, and yummy drinks. Also was the first time most of us tried "edibles". We did yummy chocolate brownies. We all lounged around listening to good music and having great conversation.
I like your earringI have yet to run out of pics to post, so here's one from some time before I started dyeing my hair:
I like your earring
But is that a manly thing to say?
I don't know anymore....
(Oh well, I've never gave a damn about all that stuff anyway lol)
Technically there are two earrings in that picture.
But I'm assuming you're talking about the more prominent one, the Deathly Hallows symbol that I don't wear anymore because I got tired of nerds hitting on me in line at Starbucks, ahaha.
As for whether or not what you said fits the most widely-accepted standard for manliness: you just showed appreciation for a piece of metal sticking through a hole in my flesh, which is manly af. ![]()
