I know this isn't the proper forum for this question, but I am unable to post in the combat forum. Anyways, I 'm leveling a archer inquisitor right now (will switch to DW from time to time to change up the playstyle). I'm having a hard time deciding which specilization to go with: artificer or tempest? I like both a lot, I've already got an assassin rogue, so that's not an option. I like both range and melee playstyles. Which spec would be the better overall DPS for my inquisitor?

I think Tempest would give better overall DPS. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, I think some of the tempest potions don't really work with archers as they're melee-centric potions?

Artificer is fun. Take spike trap, run up to enemies and toss spike trap down, immediately do a leaping shot. Much carnage ensues.

I enjoy Tempest Archer. I haven't played much with Artificer because I don't use Varric much and haven't rolled it with a character yet (I've only done Tempest Archer, Assassin DW, and Assassin Archer) so I can't speak on that, apologies.
My strategy generally in fights was Full Draw then Flask of Fire then Long Shot x 3. Flask of Lightning I used to re-position myself if I couldn't use Leaping Shot immediately. Leaping Shot is a better way to get range (for Long Shot/getting out of melee mobs) than it because it does damage. Flask of Frost I just activated if Fire and Lightning were on cooldown and I didn't have any other options, but it can be useful. Tempest Archer allows you to do reasonable amounts of damage fast to multiple enemies and navigate the field well. I think it's really fun/effective though, and if I'm not playing a rogue character, sometimes I'll take control of Sera because I enjoy it.

The Elemental Mines can make a wonderful Defensive shield for the Archer.

The thing to note regarding the archery artificer is that it doesn't really play like an archetypical archer. The only bow ability you're really gonna use is Leaping Shot (which has effectively no cooldown or energy cost once you've got a good amount of critical chance), thanks to the high number of hits triggering your passives more often (along with any masterworks - using both 5 hit and 4 hit hidden blades, or alternatively using the unique artifice bow is crazy), and you're going to want to be using that from point blank range, which Hook and Tackle helps considerably with. Likewise, to take full advantage of the massive power of elemental mines, you need to be reasonably close (in fact a point blank leaping shot puts you in a pretty good position to mine people) - simply hiding behind the mines is a waste, you want to be dropping them right on the enemies. And then, thanks to all those explosions refilling your mana and finishing the cooldown, doing again immediately. If you want to stand back and rain death upon your foes, look elsewhere. If you're happy getting up close and personal, launching yourself away from enemies then pulling yourself back in like a living yo-yo, hurling explosions left right and centre, then the artificer archer is great fun.
