I loved the ambiguous backstories of DAI. It was a step forward, but now they took two steps back.

Problem I see with background is storywise , people who were selected to be on the Ark project probably had to fill a certain profile.

Wether wealthy folks, scientists , or whatever.

If you're one of the leader of an Ark you kind of need a specific background too.I doubt you can end up in this position by accident...

So in this case I'm all for a specific background.

I don't disagree, but I don't think we'll be the leader of an Ark though. We'll be the leader of the Templet/colonization expediction/whatever we're doing.

While I'm all for family, I seriously hope no Fallout 4-type family.

I would mind if we had a child but as long as it isn't stolen and I can form a connection to them I will be happy.

People actually liked the absence of backstory in DA:I?? One of the main reasons the game felt like such a piece of empty crap?

Okay.

I don't even think we'll be that. We'll just be a commander of a ship and crew, one of many in that project. Bioware even says Ryder isn't proven like Shepard was. So having an ambiguous background would work perfectly fine.

specifically placed ambiguity would serve the new game well.

Okay.

It is a different way of roleplaying and one a number of people including myself prefer.

That it did not work for you does not mean it is terrible: it just might mean you might prefer a different way of roleplaying that is more set and defined.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't have worked, though we should've still had some qualifications. And I'm not sure there'll be that many others with the same role as us, at least in the humanity's side.

Hopefully they give those options. Though I'm fully expecting and dreading a situation similar to the Hawke family in Dragon Age 2.

Oh, you mean the one where you could completely choose whether you were friends or rivals with your sibling, and how you reacted to your mother's death?

I disagree .I mean you don't ambiguously end up on a project like that.

I assume the Ark project was top secret , cost a small fortune , and was very specific in its goals.

I also assume it was done during the Reapers invasion so again everyone in there had to pass under Reaper radar.

And there's also a small chance people who worked on it  were biaised and wanted to save themselves or at the very least people they knew and could trust.

No offense, but that all sounds terrible.

I'm not offended but I don't understand how it's supposed to be terrible?

I like the idea of having family, it gives the character a bit more meat and reliability.

Has plot holes as massive as the largest black holes.

According to your post we'll be playing selfish cowards.

I don't. It ruins the chance of replayability since our characters are predetermined to such a huge degree.

I'm not seeing plot holes ?

As for selfish cowards?Well if the Ark was designed so a couple of species could survive Reapers total anihilation , it means all those people left knowing billions would die.

But that would be the goal of the project anyway so I'm not seeing the issue.

Our cycle does not have the technology to travel intergalactically. Nowhere even close. And yet somehow within two years we figure it out, and built not only one but multiple drives capable of that and massive Ark ships to put them in, all in complete secrecy.

I have an issue with that being the reason for this entire mission.

Well I agree with that but it's not happening after the Reapers , I guess leaving before ME3 ending and waking up hundred years after the fact with no way to contact the milky way will take care of pretending nothing blue , green or red happened.

But anyway about the technology , it will pop up anyway because the Ark are a thing.

There's no point in saying it was a known project because in ME3 no one knew and secret project is conveniant to explain in secret some scientist figure out how to build Ark (perhaps stealing some Reaper technology) and secret  project make sense with the Reaper threat , I assume the Reaper weren't about to throw a goodbye Ark party with champagne and present .
