Well, according to the PCgamer statistics (the newest one),40% of the players played as femshep,so it's almost half of the numbers.

Interesting, I would like a link please.

and by now I mean nowadays.Or do you think every country in the world always respected women's rights? -_-
Fictional characters have rights now?

Good point. How about the concept art of the two protagonists with the female PC checking out her Omni-tool while the male PC is in the background with his gun raised? I think that might be decent promo material and even box art.

that sound interesting. I like that idea.

Yeah, if Bioware really wants to show the protagonist on the cover, then that's how I would go about it.

After reading some comments,I saw that most of you think about this kind of problem in three different ways.

1 - "Just show both male and female characters in the promotional arts and everything is gonna be just fine".

2 - "Never use the main character in the promotional artwork, and always use a symbol,a villain or an NPC."

3 - "I dont care about who is the cover boy/girl,I just want to play the game".

The first two seem ok to me,but the third one gets my attention.

As it was stated before in this thread, the default PC is an icon.It shows who is the main character/who you are going to play with.

A lot of people never used Sheploo, the same way many people didn't want to use the default red haired Femshep, and yet, they are always depicted as the main characters in the promotional arts.

My point now is,if Bioware is going to show the main character in CGIs and promotional arts, they just should just present him/her covered inside an armor, with both characters being equally presented.

Or even better, they could simply ignore the PC in the promotional arts, and simply use a nice view,a companion or a symbol like they did with the collectors edition.

Who the heck said I was talking about fictional characters? I was saying that it would be fair if both genders were presented equally.

Sheploo is used as the cover boy almost every time.Bioware should simply use the female more than it was used in ME3...

That PC gamer article notes it was an unofficial survey. 18% is still the more reliable stat because it came from BioWare itself.

I can't wait to get that game, Tune Raider with Larry Croft as the hero wearing sexy lederhosen.  Also Beers Edge and that guy Frank leaping around on roof tops and such.  Have to hope they have proper male promo box art for them.

Fixing a perceived problem of using one gender far more than the other is not done by using one gender far more than the other.

I know, and that's why I said that both genders should be used equally.

Sorry if it was hard to comprehend.

And Bioware said it a long time ago (2013 I think).

a great number of players played the game using both male and female characters, and this number probably increased after 3 years.

Okay,I have to say that I laughed after seeing this comment.

You're the one who said: "Women were never respected and seen as equal as they are now" and  "and by now I mean nowadays.Or do you think every country in the world always respected women's rights? -_-"

That's kinda irrelevant when talking about fictional characters.

I had just woken up =P

Though the point is mostly that 40% is at best a highly unreliable stat because it's not from official sources. It's just from somebody going around on Twitter asking random people stuff.

BioWare's telemetry data is likely a few months after release in 2012 so it very well might be wrong, but without word from BioWare it's pure speculation.

really? so why there are so many feminist icons that are fictional characters? and not just feminist, but also dark skinned characters representing social movements too?

This is not simply about a fictional character,it's about a best seller game icon.

I don't usually complain about this kind of issue, but come on.

There are not many games where women and black people are the main characters, and the same goes to blockbuster movies.

You may recall games like GTA,but let's not forget that the main character is a criminal,so it's even worse than having no black main characters.

P.S. just for you to see how fictional characters are important in our lives, take a look at this.

That survey uses a terrible method, as the author freely admits. It isn't anything like a representative sample of players; really, it's no better than polling people on the BSN, and might be giving fairly similar results.

Oh dear lord.

1. There is no one main character in the series, there are several protagonists.

2. The protagonists are suppose to be awful human beings who will steal your car and run you over if you have a ton of cash.

3. The protagonists are from diverse backgrounds.

Oh and one more thing, the GTA series is a massive satire of America and Britain to a far less extent.

Similar sort of expectations.  The male Space Marine is still bigger for marketing, but Bioware is well aware of how diverse its fanbase is so I do expect some smaller bits of marketing for the female lead.  Like Trespasser even Bethesda used the female lead for the first time in the Far Harbor DLC, which is nice to see. Kind of shows the growing interest in female protagonists across the board.  Its a growing base and certainly won't be ignored.

Bethesda also used both male and female protagonists in the launch trailer for FO4 and miracles of miracles no one got confused (which had been the argument against such a practice in the past).

Complains that billboard promotes violence against women, makes 50 shades of grey a massive hit.

I had no idea Colonel Radec was so into social justice.......

Anyway, I wouldn't mind males or females in advertising or promo art for the game. Having both as in ME3 was ideal IMO.

What I really want is quarians. Quit ignoring us in advertising you biower racists.

I've never really been one to get caught up in all of this gender politics stuff that is going on.  I personally don't give a crap which gender the put on the cover, they could always do what ME 3 did and make a reversible cover for each gender or they could put both genders on the cover.  They could also design a generic cover without the protagonist on the cover.  Either way someone is going to accuse them of something.

Oh for Odin's sake, you think I don't know this? besides, the main problem here is not about GTA.That was just a small example.

Back to Mass Effect, there shouldn't be a default PC in any promotional art,be it male or female.

I was just saying that if Bioware really insists in creating a random default PC and promoting it,it should at least equally introduce a male and female character and never show their faces in CGIs and game covers,to let the players imagine that the person there is their character, not a random dude created by Bioware to promote their game.

I have a softer side.

Just don't let my boss discover this or I might lose my job.

I like it, not only are you showing the two genders but you are showing different classes which shows new players there are different ways you can play the game.

I would also prefer a symbol instead of either male or female.  But if they must put a face to the game, I'd like to use both.  I think I saw a suggestion somewhere with the male and female back to back.  I liked that.  Or show the companions like KOTOR with Bastila, Malak and HK47 great cover.

Advertisement is another thing.  I do hope they do some advertisement showing that you can customize your character including the sex.  I prefer games that let me play either which is why BW has always been one of my 1st picks.   I buy the games, but my husband and I share them and it's nice when we can each play someone we can relate to.

Actually,I knew.I was just saying that one of the few places black characters are important is in games like GTA.I was simply not talking about the white ones.Yeah,I decided to "backtrack" and let you with the last speech.I usually get bored after so many time talking about the same thing.

And everytime Radec appears in the game he is talking to his "boss",minions and enemies, and that's why he is so tough and ruthless.

a Colonel doesn't have to "always be a Colonel".Putin his title aside,he is a person like any other.....

Sorry,I had to make that joke...
