Rift mage is forgiving about the different element on staves, as you shouldn't use lightning anyway. I always use a frost staff, as fire is covered by immolate and fire mine, and I switch staff just for dragons. I also loved to use the pre-Trespasser Blizzard without losing mana; Blizzard, pull of the Abyss, fire mine, stonefist... maybe it's redudant, but feels good.

I don't agree about the fact that the AI can use tank, honestly. I've always seen Cassandra and Blackwall using war cry out of range. The one time I went tank pre-skyhold things were so different that I thought I lowered the difficulty somehow.

Well there is a degree of the player picking proper skills for a tank.  I mean if you don't put your taunts on preferred then you should expect them to be a poor tank.  AI handles tanking just fine.  Get all taunts, set to preferred.  Done.  For a bonus, you get the party-guard Horn of Valor and put on preferred too.  If your tank is dying, get more tank passives.  If your group is dying maybe don't have them stand in the fire or right next to the guy with the big maul.

In my experience if I put War Cry and Challange on preferred, the tank will use them when s/he enters combat, while out of range, messing with the first engagement. I guess the new toggle for Payback strike is a sort of walkaround for this issue.

That's odd.  I don't see that behavior.  How do you set their tactics?  Are they set to defend or follow, and is the target themselves or another character in the party?  I always set my tank to follow themselves.  That may sound odd, but I've been doing that since watching a tactic video put out by KinectGTR.

My tanks tend to use grappling chain to pull an enemy to them at the onset of a battle.  Later in the game they will cast Horn of Valor at first even though both are set to preferred.

Same with me. Using either Cass or Blackwall pre-specialization, their start of battle routine is always: 1) HoV, 2) run to a target (usually the closest), 3) War Cry.

I have both of those on Preferred, everything else enabled. Both 2H configured. Third Preferred is Pommel Strike, which they use very effectively.

I have them Follow self.

I set them to follow themselves. I solved the issue by using Charging bull as preferred, with war cry and challange on normal activation.

Maybe Grappling chain or Horn of Valor has some built-in priority.  I bet if I built a tank without grappling chain and just set Warcry to preferred they'd do what you describe.  But with Trespasser DLC every tank should go grab Horn of Valor with upgrade IMHO.  And in doing so you get Grappling Chain fairly early.

Today I'm going to start my first post-Trespasser game and I'll surely put the horn on my warriors (and I'll probably remove war cry in favor of the new payback strike). I'm still undecided on my Inquisitor class though.
