Again, i am new to the game and this might be mentioned somewhere else, but i couldn't find it quickly. I sided with the Dragon Cult, unlocked the Reaver, and returned to Haven directly. The guard at the entrance says that the shop is over there and that i am free to get supplies there, since i am Andraste's Champion. When i enter the store, the store is empty. I had no clue that there was the corpse of a Knight of Redcliffe in there, in the back of the room. While i was there for the first time, i just traded and went for the chantry...

Is the disappearance of the shop keeper normal?

Yeah, he's supposed to disappear after you confront the people in the chantry.

...this got me thinking...what are the best stores? Overall, there are like a billion items, but not really a lot seems worth buying. So far, i think that the dwarf in Denerim's market place seems like a good source, as is the Dalish who wants the ironbark, but besides them...and by the way, do all merchant have the same prices for selling stuff to them? Seems a bit weird that a Dalish Longbow has the same price at the Dalish Camp and at the Market in Denerim!

Mhm...guess no game is perfect in that sense...

what are the best stores?

Wonders of Thedas is definitely a top tier shop, it has great equipment for mages (Wintersbreath and Reapers Vestments among them).

Gorim in the Denerim market sells a few good items (Rock Knocker, Katriel's Grasp), but nothing special imo, the rest is generic dwarven stuff, but he has a pretty wide selection.

Herren in Wade's smithy is I think your best source for armor, he sells a full set of everything, and also the Felon's Coat and Evon's Mail, which are pretty good armors. Plus it is place where you can order the custom dragon armors.

Early on, the merchant in Lothering (the one at the chantry that acts like jerk to people) is a pretty good source of generic equipment, at least his stock beats Barlin's for sure. But again, you can acquire some pretty decent equipment during the Lothering quest, so he is on the bottom end of the list.

Garin in Orzammar sells the Lifegiver ring and the Rosethorn dagger but the rest of his stock is pretty generic, so I guess he's among the honorable mentions; as is Legnar, the other dwarf merchant in Orzammar, who sells the Shadow of the Empire armor.

Alimar in Orzammar sells the Effort boots, which are part of a great armor set, but again, the rest of his stock is average, so honorable mention again.

Ruck in the Deep Roads has some pretty good uniques, and his shop is a good place to unload the tons of loot you've gathered during the search for Branka quest, so I think he deserves a decent spot on this list.

Another honorable mention is Mikhael Dryden at Soldier's Keep, as he forges Starfang and sells uniquely colored variants of armors.

Also, I guess we can't forget about Bodhan, as he is the camp merchant and has some good stuff like the Spellward.

Varathorn is the ultimate source for crafting material with his unlimited stock of virtually everything, so for that alone, he deserves a spot.

Could poor Ruck not come up with a worse spot for his shop?  Lack of parking is one thing but....

Also, remember Mikhail Dryden is good for upgrading armor and weapns!  Sell him the Grey Warden armor you get from killing Sofia and the materiels and stats of the armor are improved.  This works for most of the better weapons.  Buying back the upgraded items will cost you, of course.

The quartermaster in the circle tower has some really good stuff. He sells Andruils Blessing which is one of the best belts in the game as well as Staff of the Magister lord which is one of the best staves in the game. On top of that hes the only merchant that sells unlimited lyrium, has an arcane tome and a backpack upgrade.

It wasn’t until I read this that I even knew you could trade with him!

Rusk is your supplier of deep mushrooms.  Too bad I never use the stuff.  I'm a bad crafter.

Eh, I mainly craft healing potions and that’s about it.

I think I use deep mushrooms to craft a couple more minor injury kits. Not that important unless your in the deep roads.
