I've been playing through the DA series again just to mix up my overall storyline a bit and the one gripe i have with DA 2 is the amount of junk that you get compared to actual usable loot that you can equip. I mean yes the Devs fill up crates with junk for trades sake but for crying out loud why the hell would you only put a junk item in a chest and not some more valuable loot, it's a freaking joke...

It is silly, but overall the DA2 system is at least easier than DA:O.  In Origins I have to sift through everything trying to figure out what to toss, in DA2 I can press one button and it's gone.  I believe that's why they did it, to make it easier to get rid of that stuff.

My question is why have any junk at all?  It's in DAI as well, but why bother?  Just give us decent stuff to loot or nothing at all, and give us greater financial rewards from quests.  Sorted.

Maybe some other adventurers went through there before you and stole all the good stuff?

A lot of the stuff isn't actually junk but stuff that Hawke can't use. There are plenty of valuables like gems, statues and books. Ravens feathers is a good example, you can't use it, but someone else could fashion a quill out of it (scribes), use it in clothing or masks (tailors), use it to decorate staffs, totems or use it in rituals. (mages),

Some of the broken stuff could be sold to blacksmiths who can either fix it or use the non broken parts with other items. Torn clothes can be mended or the fabric used in new clothes or rags. The rags could for example become bandages for healers to use or the injury kits you can buy. Some of the clothing items could be sold at a very cheap price to the people living in dark town or the slums.

So story wise, Hawke is making profit by gathering both the usual valuables and the stuff adventurers often overlook. Gameplay wise it's telling you what is safe to sell and removing the whole filtering progress. So it's not junk, just stuff Hawke can't use. It's also why you can flag weapons as "junk".

That makes much more sense when you put it in that context  :D

Yeah, this irritated me a bit too. Why not just coins in the chests rather than making me collect and sell crap?
