I'm starting my world state from scratch: My Warden is a Dalish warrior, Hawke is a mage and... I want one of the next two heroes to be another mage.

Just one, because three mages in a row would be just weird. But thing is, I don't know which of them to choose.

My Inquisitor is to be a Dalish elf. It would be good to make her a mage, because as the clan's First she would have a different background than my Warden, a hunter.

And the reason why I'd like my Qunari protagonist in DA4 to be a mage is that after Sten and the Iron Bull, it feels like at this point we just expect these physically imposing people to be always warriors and preferably 2-handers. A would-be-sareebas seems more unique.

So the question is, which of these two reasons is more compelling to motivate one to go with a Fade-touched protagonist?

I personally have no urge to play a Qunari. Maybe just to try Sera out? Eh... anyway. Even I'd be grumpy if they hemmed in the race options after expanding them. 2nd point, not being able to play a Qunari in Tevinter would be such a waste. I hope they bring back Origin stories so we don't all have the same beginning/measely paragraph if history.

I honestly don't think you should base any decision on a hypothetical game, with a hypothetical race selection with unknown origins, and a plot we know next to nothing about.

Just focus on the current three games. You likely have a couple of years to get the order all straightened out once we know anything about DA4; worry about that PC later.

To your question, I am of two minds regarding the Dalish mage for DAI. I think it may be more likely that the Keeper sends a hunter (roguish type) to observe the conclave, rather than their First. I don't have anything to base this on, it's just a feeling. But the reason for being at the Conclave might not bother you overmuch, or you may already have a good RP headcanon for that, so it won't matter. On the other hand, there is a very strong connection with mages, magic, and the Fade all throughout DAI; even closer as a Dalish mage, given Solas. There is also the whole Anchor thing and the opportunity to be a rift mage, also fitting with the story.

Considering only the content of DAI, I would say that the Dalish mage is the better choice for that game.

But you've played the game before, you know what the options are. Think of yourself playing that character for 100+ hours. Is that something you will enjoy? If this is only about setting things up in the DA Keep, then my previous suggestion stands.

As Nightscrawl said, I don't think you should base a current world on an as yet unknown protagonist in the new game.

Imo I'd play the IQ you want to play.  Then, if you can indeed be a Qunari mage, you could always switch Inquisitors in the Keep, swapping the elf mage for another you've played in a different world or just switching her class to rogue/warrior.
