True, but the thing is, the less sensible (or rational) people do not fare well in combat, especially prolonged combat.-
I've read many books written by people who participated in combat and fought in wars and no matter the period or war, they all had one thing in common: they were among the most level headed, pragmatic and sensible people of their time.
Most people who participated in wars likely didn't know how to write, or just weren't interested in doing so, so the sample you are using is not representative, in my view.
I should point out that I think beards and long hair look awful on men and I think women can look quite attractive with short hair as well, so I don't even have an aesthetic issue with being restricted to military regulations in this respect. Hell, I would prefer it, since I also agree that short hair is by far the more practical and sensible choice in this case, and I'm even willing to concede that most professional armies throughout history have enforced it.
But generally, every time the subject of "realistic" fighting looks comes up, I feel compelled to point out that 1. people throughout history often went to battle in rather impractical garb and/or haircuts for any number of reasons and 2. this isn't even close to the most unrealistic thing about ME.
Guys, I'd really appreciate it if you could take that discussion/argument to another thread, please.
There's one here where similar issues and opinions are already being discussed:
My bad. I actually got the two threads mixed up. Sorry.
