I'm just curious but why not carry a gun instead of a knife? Don't knives need you to be up close to the opponent thereby putting yourself in a dangerous position. Also what if there are multiple opponents? Have you seen or been in any real life hand to hand combat situations?
In most real-life hand-to-hand combat situations even bringing a weapon at all (at least a visible one) is a bad idea. A weapon should only ever be brought to bear if your own life is threatened first. Once you draw a weapon you've escalated the situation to life-or-death and made your opponent potentially more dangerous. This is because the moment that weapon enters the fight, your opponent will see the fight as potentially life-or-death for them, and any punches they would have pulled won't be pulled: they'll be aiming to take you down in any way they have to, and won't try to avoid causing you serious injury. It escalates the confrontation instantly, so it's something one must be careful of.
But regarding the guns versus knives question, a knife or melee weapon is still more reliable at short range, because often they can be used from multiple directions, whereas with a gun you must point the barrel at someone in order for them to be in damage range. You can pistol-whip and such, but a gun isn't built for smacking people with, so that's more an emergency move than anything. A knife can be stabbed, swiped, slashed. A bat or sword can be swung, thrust, whatever. Melee options with guns are limited and trying to line up a shot at close range is risky. That's why soldiers in ME3 modded their omnitools with custom-tailored melee options that could be used on command.
It's worth mentioning that as far as lining up shots go, CLOSE RANGE is not the same as MID-RANGE. Generally, as your target gets further away from you physically, they have to move a greater distance to the left or right in order to strafe away from your gun. At long range firing on a target becomes precise enough to offset this and make it easier for a target to dodge a shot, but mid-range is the true danger-zone for sidearms. It becomes easier to "fire from the hip" and hit a target without aiming down the sights. This is the range at which you can fire at least partially by "feel" and still have a chance at hitting some part of your target. Gunmen who can aim a precise shot quickly are even deadlier in this circumstance.
All of these combat variables are vaguely worthless if you don't know how to fight at close range competently, though, whereas a gun is still a much more dangerous weapon in the hands of the inept.
