Is a mage PC beneficial for a Solasmance playthrough?

I'm currently planning my next playthrough where I want to experience all the new DLCs (I've only played the main campaign). And I'd really like to play a rogue from a gameplay/combat perspective. On the other hand when playing a mage is highly beneficial in a Solasmance playthrough I could easily give the mage PC the rogue skill trees since I'm playing on PC.

So, what's the difference between a rogue and a mage Solasmance playthrough? Spoilers allowed.

Thanks, but how drastic is the difference compared to a non-mage PC?

There's no difference. There is one flirt line he has that is class specific and that's it.

True, however from a role-playing point of view it makes a lot of sense to do the romance as a mage.

Never made that much sense to me. Solas will love your character the same. Only difference is head canon.

IMO headcanon is half the fun, but yeah, not really any significant difference, but if Lavellan is a Mage she has more things in common with Solas.

If you're a rogue, you're a Dalish hunter... who better to hunt a wolf? B)

Puts a whole new spin on Little Red Riding Hood.

Hell yeah.

Especially with how the relationship starts with quizze kissing Solas first.

I personally don't think Lavellan being a mage is integral to their relationship. What Solas loves about the Inquisitor is their thoughtful and curious nature, their spirit, and their compassion. He doesn't love her because she can do magic.
If her bent a mage mattered then he would have seen all mages as people, but he doesn't. Because even the current mages are like tranquil to him.

I honestly can't think of a single significant difference. He has a different flirt at one point for a mage, a warrior, and a rogue - every class gets their unique comment. There could be more, but I doubt it.

Thanks for all the replies. And in terms of the general story? Is there a significant difference?

There's no real difference between playing a mage or non-mage.  You get a couple of dialogue choices about the Fade and Rift Mages get an extra way of freeing Wisdom during All New, Faded For Her.  Really, it all comes down to how you headcanon the relationship, and your Inquisitor.  For me personally it's easier to a First as a leader since she would've got training to become a Keeper (the only difference is her clan is now a lot bigger).

I enjoyed the mage/mage aspect of the romance - I could headcanon them studying magic together (since they were both Rift Mages) - but other people like the mage/non-mage aspect.

Not really. If you play as a mage, you have special dialogue options sometimes that aren't available from the Arcane Knowledge perk (like being able to make people Tranquil in judgments) and specific options/mentions when they make sense to have them/short conversations with followers, but it doesn't have a huge impact on the story or anything. I mean in terms of how you approach your character it could be huge, but in terms of divergent options in the story, I wouldn't say its significant. It's more flavor content. I think the only real significant content in the game that is limited by race/class are romances (because of race gating, or the special problem with Sera/Lavellan), specializations, and specific race war table missions.

I've only done the Solas romance with a rogue, but I enjoyed it a lot.

All have their own merits. None are better than the other so it is down to which the individual person prefers for their playthrough of the game.

The one I went with for my "canon" Inquisitor Lavellan is mage because of many reasons and since my canon is from a blind run, the reasons were unrelated to the Solas romance. That said, the romance added some interesting aspects;

As the First to the Keeper of the clan, Lavellan is basically second in line to Deshanna Istimaethoriel meaning that Lavellan will become the new Keeper after the old one's death or retirement. One of the responsibilities of a Keeper is to protect the clan from Fen'harel, the Dread Wolf.

Additionally, there is the roleplaying bonus in that another responsibility is to know, preserve and pass on ancient lore and there is an awful lot of that being discovered in the game.

It's really up to personal preference.

Part of the reason a lot seem to prefer a Mage Lavellan is because there's some amusing dramatic irony at work.

Spoiler

However playing as a non-Mage Lavellan is extremely thematic in terms of how it relates to Solas' character arc.

Spoiler

Both have their merits, although neither really changes the romance as it occurs in game. Both provide equally interesting - but different - story dynamics, depending on your interpretation and viewpoint.
