Roughly the middle of last month I picked up a GotY copy of DA:I for my PC. Last night I completed the game with my first character and started the final DLC.

Now I cannot say the game ever ran 100% smoothly; frame rate varied from stop motion to near smooth and I cannot figure out why. But twice this morning I have had CTDs for the first time sense installing the game. The first time was at the moment when I encountered the spirit elves for he first time, the second was in the deep roads after speaking with the former Templar. The Templar conversation for that matter dragged out nearly 30 seconds after choosing each conversation choice.

My computer 'should' be more than powerful enough to run this game properly. Its less than 5 months old with 12gigs of ram. I cant figure out why the game is crashing with the DLC. Is this a glitch I should be aware of or just something I need to work through. As this is my only play through I have no mods installed.

What are your other specs? Video card, processor, etc.

Its a box tower so I'm really not sure if these what you are looking for. I'm not what you would call a computer savvy person.

The main game was designed to be compatible with stuff like the XBox 360 and Playsation 3. Trespasser was not. That may be why you're having more framerate issues than you did with the main game.

Do you have all the patches? A bug with Lunge and Slash was causing crashes until they patched it. This is only with the L&S ability where you don't lose stamina if the enemy is targeting someone else. But I think Trespasser had other crash bugs in it too.

I haven't heard of any other people seeing issues like this in Trespasser.

I'm not sure whether http://forum.bioware...fortless-lunge/ ever got fixed, it's possible that could be the issue. That's just a guess though, they did say they were going to fix that...

You could try turning your settings down and see if that has any effect.

Yeah, if you're using onboard graphics, it's not going to be able to handle the higher graphics settings too well. That's probably why you got the occasional skipping in the base game, too.

I'm already running it on medium as that lessened the frame rate issue to a playable state. I could try low and see what happens.

As for the patch question I believe it is fully patched. I have it set to install any patches as they are released.

That graphics chip doesn't meet the minimum requirements for the game, so if it runs on the lowest possible settings, consider yourself fortunate. benchmarks for that chip show that the game is not playable and, this was done before any DLC was available. 30 FPS is the minimum considered playable.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

low 1024x768 22.1  fps
med. 1366x768 14.5  fps
high 1920x1080 5.8  fps
ultra 1920x1080 3.8  fps
» The benchmarks indicate that the game is not playable in the tested settings.

in English?

It seems like what you are saying is the 5 month old computer is using tech that was outdated in 2013? Seems like I got screwed here. least it was free.

You can acquire a brand new piece of hardware, if it doesn't have the components (read, video card) to run the graphics of the game you're going to run into this kind of trouble. Many computers sold are not designed for video games. Sorry.

It's less about the age of the system, and more about the fact that Intel onboard graphics aren't usually meant for gaming. They're meant for office tasks. If you do want to play games on it, you'll need to reorient towards older and less demanding stuff. I'd say you have a good chance of running games from up to 2012 with no issues.

running the DLC in low seems to have done the trick. Finished the deep roads portion of the DLC w/o any CTDs and the framerate is the fastest I've seen to date. Well at least the tower was free. It may suck as a gaming platform but that is a bonus.

Well, being a tower, you might be able to get a better graphics card for it, for under 200 USD, if it has the power supply to run a decent card that will fit, if not might need a new one of those too but still for under 500 USD, you might make it a decent gaming rig - beats the 2100 USD my rig cost me to build. (of course 500 won't get you a 1000 watt PSU or Dual Nvidia Titan graphics cards but, it might get a decent gaming rig for medium and some high settings out of that free tower.)

This little piece is your issue... I'm actually impressed that you manage to get all the way to trespasser without losing your mind. Just one thing, are you sure you don't have a GPU but you plugged the monitor in the wrong port or did not install the controllers?

Onboard graphics were not made for games or 3D rendering, and while they can work, they put a lot of strain on the CPU, but it seems weird that a desktop is sold with so many RAM and not a GPU... Your current processor is not bad, it should do the trick with most game on medium and sometimes high settings if you upgrade your graphics. There are a lot of great and affordable options from AMD/Ati that will have you running two maybe even three years more.

If you plan on upgrading which will be the most sensible thing to do, please take care of not getting skimmed with the newest most-powerful pieces out there; two months later you'll end up regretting it when you see something better at a lower price. Two new nvidia 1080 would do the trick perefectly instead of two nvidia titan... Actually, just one will do the trick if you're aming for medium-high settings which given your processor seems to be the best choice.

Yeah, that is kind of weird. I can think of a couple of work tasks where I'd want that much RAM without graphics, but it's kind of specialized stuff.

Not as specialized as you may think. There is a room like this pretty much everywhere where I have worked, and where my friends work:

Side question; what things are given to the golden nug when you click on it?

Does it keep schematics from one game to the next cause it said collectables... Having to rebuy all of those again would be less than exciting.

From the DA wikia.

Interacting with the statue will synchronize your collectables across all current and future playthroughs. Items from the following collections can be updated:

  • Schematics, including weapons, armor, and rune schematics (Tier 1 schematics excluded)
  • Nursery Seeds
  • Mounts
  • Skyhold upgrades
  • Skyhold decorations
  • Potion recipes

Right. But my impression is that he got the PC through normal retail channels, rather than eBay or some such. I wouldn't expect to run into a server config in retail unless I was deliberately hunting for one.

Hey, are there still mobos without vidcard slots kicking around? I remember friends getting burned on secondhand PCs that way.

I haven't seen any, but there's custom mobo's that skip out on that feature, I'm sure.
