After numerous PTs I've finally identified what makes the game goes off the rails.

It clicked right after I finished "Where Lies The Abyss".  That meta-quest is what really marks the beginning of Act III - since the next time you visit the War Room is the moment when Morrigan joins the Inner Council and where you're immediately prompted to pursue Corephyus in the Arbor Wilds.

With the Power requirements set as they are, you already have enough of it, by this point, to precipitate the ending, even though you may be only halfway through the content.  As it stands now in my current game I have unlocked all the zones (the major ones minus the Hissing Wastes, plus the Deep Roads of 'The Descent', the Frostback Basin, the Forbidden Oasis, the Cradle of Sulevin, the Dirthamen Temple) without having visited any of them - and yet I have more than 80 powers available.  I can thus skip all of those, pay to get to the Arbor Wilds, and rush to the game's conclusion.

This is not to mention the last of Varric's personal quests (the one with Bianca), which gives more insights on Red Lyrium.  This is something we should get during the First Act, not long after visiting Valammar in the Hinterlands, and not after our visit to the Fade.

The Power requirements should be re-balanced.  All the majors crossroads events (meeting with the Grand Clerics in Act I, WE&WH, HLTA, etc) should see their PR significantly increased so that we are encouraged to complete zones before seeking them.

I wonder if there is a mod that plays/ changes those Power requirements?

If it's contagious, don't give it to me!  :D

Back to seriousness: you won't get any argument from me that PR is out of whack. I won't debate the "canon order" for WEWH vs. Abyss, though. Gigabytes have already been spilled about that, but I might have to argue the rest.

Weaving the "extra" zones in by the Power mechanism isn't the answer. If they are to be essential, they need to be made relevant to the narrative.

Personally, I prefer they stay optional. I don't want the Power mechanism to force me into the Exalted Plains, which gives me a headache. Everyone has their zones that they hate -- not a lot of love for the Hissing Wastes, for example, though personally I don't mind that zone -- and compounding that by making them mandatory through the PR would just make people more unhappy.

Instead, convince me I want to go to those places because they do something interesting to the main narrative. As they stand now, most of them are there pretty much for replay value and to have different places for companions quests to happen.

This is why I finish everything before going to the Arbor wilds. After the Mythal mission, everyone talks like the end is nigh (Josephine's line is especially silly), so it seems odd to me to do anything else at that point. I also put off talking to Morrigan for as long as I'm able. Unfortunately, that war room scene is required if you want normal access to the war table to travel or continue doing the operations.

I kind of felt bad dragging Morrigan to the War Table over and over again while I do silly stuff like Gather Leather or do Part XIV of Varric's copycat writer mission chain.

**** the Exalted Plains.

I mean... no yeah, **** that map. This game is supposed to be 18+, so I can say that right? :P

Anyway, I do feel that they need to make much more of the optional content in the next game feel more fulfilling/rewarding than DA:I's was, but I still like having it. Having the option to either rush through the game, scraping by by the skin of your teeth, or run around amassing as much power and resources as you can before finally going to fight Coryphefish adds a lot to the whole role playing element of the game. It's also true that the power system seems a bit off, especially if you do choose to spend a lot of time doing side quests etc, but I usually just imagine that it equates to troop numbers, gold, political influence, secrets, etc etc etc, and that's enough to keep me happy and prevent my brain from nit picking. lol

Keep your fingers crossed though! I mean with all of the plot threads and details that they added to DA lore in Inquisition, not to mention everything that's yet to be addressed from DA:O (-coughtheArchitectcough-), there is definitely a TON of juicy stuff for them to use as inspiration to create some choice optional content in future installments. :3
