It's about exploration. N7 is military. There is nothing to say that the exploration teams in Andromeda are military, let alone the elite.
While inwardly agonizing over the plastic looking textures, I wondered why the hell they went to sleep in that type of gear? I'd have expected something that looked more like a wetsuit, or something. I knew we wouldn't see 1980s underwear, as in Alien, but I expected something less armor-like.
If they were frozen they wouldn't be "sleeping" sleeping so I don't think comfort would matter all that much.

I can understand that your personal tastes may not land on her looks, but to call her ugly? That's a little extreme.
She remind me of Ellie from The Last Of Us. I find her cute. 
But a little on the sweet side for my tastes (maybe not a bad thing...a cute little thing that bathe in blood of her enemies...mmm....can be a character to think for a run), but I never use default characters, so... I really don't care.

a tweet asked the devs about more details on the protagonist's armour, and some dev replied that they're on it. So it's kind of ufficiously confirmed.
The funny thing about all those type of threads is that I recall plenty of threads and people saying that Jack, Miranda, Ashey, or Liara (less then the others, but there were stll people complaining about her) werent' attractive and worse, in different threads.
People just have different opinion on what's attractive and what's not.
But hey, at least I'll get a good laught every now and then when I'll read those threads.

asari is my biggest complain but this human female look average at best. and my biggest gripe it doesn't even match the voice actress. sadly this is the trend we are heading towards. maybe in future they will all be fully covered .. even the hair.. and you can only see the eyes. like middle east women.

Make her too sexy and no girls would be playing as her.

The new woman shown in the clip looks like a botched custom femshep.
Williams was the least beautiful female squad mate/crew member of the series, but she was still pretty.
I'm concerned that we will get a bunch of ugly/masculine squad mates (and femshep) after seeing this trailer.
I was hoping for more babes like EDI, Aria, Kelly, Treynor, Liara, and even Tali, etc.
Yes the character shown is thoroughly unattractive but then, not everyone on earth looks like a supermodel. Perhaps, just maybe, the character was selected for skills other than how she looks?
That was my impression as well, I thought she looked like someone in her early twenties at most, and so a little too baby-faced for someone who is supposed to be in a senior command position. Of course with a CC that isn't an issue, and if using the female protagonist I'd just opt not to go with the default (assuming that is the default) and create a character who looks like she is in her early 30s.
I also don't get the complaints that she looks unattractive.
They tried going for youthful cutie rather than womanly.
Joining the military makes everyone seem older. Your 18 year old sibling comes back from boot an adult.
That's my beef with her appearance. I don't think she's ugly. She looks plain to me. But she looks more like a high school athlete than a soldier.
With FemShep you immediately noticed the intensity and quickly realized she's a warrior.
Where is she masculine? Looks like a normal Woman to me.
