I am happy that the Frostbite 3 Engine is powerful enough to realize the vision bioware had/have with the Mass Effect series and finally not being bogged down with a decade old engine. The asari looked amazing and very emotive. Fandoms are sometimes the death of creativity.

Do you truly think that the original vision of Bioware was for asari to have eyebrows?

What I truly think is that the asari were meant to be very emotive with eyebrows just like humans, but because of their blue skin and the limitations of the Unreal engine they couldn't be rendered properly. So with a little creativity they made the ritualistic facial painting on the asari to make them visually distinct from one another and mask the fact that their eyebrows couldn't be seen properly.  But with frostbite 3 that's no longer an issue because they can now do both. The eyebrows and the "warpaint" makes the asari look amazing. We can finally have visually unique characters in Mass Effect. this is something Bioware already did through out the entire trilogy.

We are getting a new Mass Effect and the thing people are talking about is eyebrows?

People are talking about many things. Those ridiculous eyebrows are only one of the things being discussed.

Do you think they also intended eyebrows for Krogan, Turians, and Salarians, but just couldn't realize their vision? That sure will be a joy to see. I picture a Salarian doctor with Groucho Marks brows; or maybe even a Batarian with quad-brows, now that the dream is achievable!

Those silly eyebrows won't make it into the game. The Asari was part of an animation test, which turned into an animation demo when it was shown to us. I'm sure the character will be part of the game, but she will look differently when we finally meet her.

Edit: typo

Is there any proof of that? Have they said that it only is a animation demo? Otherwise this is only speculation.

I am absolutely speculating. That's what we are all doing here. After spending too much time here, manyof us tend to fall into the bad habit of stating our speculations like they are facts, as if we have some type of insider information.

We'll see what happens. Regardless, nothing will change my opinion about those eyebrows being silly. ;) I don't like needless retcons, which this would be.

I dunno about this only being an animation demo, but this E3 2006 video proves that lots and lots and lots of things change.

It's funny that the Asari in the video does have eyebrows as well. I guess it's common for new Mass Effect installments.

I like that in a universe where most of the sentient races just happen to be Bipeds with fingers and voiceboxes, somehow the fact that they might share eyebrows is what strains disbelief.

It wouldn't have bothered me one bit if everyone started off with eyebrows. I don't like retcons. I've already suspended my disbelief for the established species lore. Needless retcons needlessly wreck verisimilitude.

We can add previously undiscovered history to existing species. We can add entirely new species. Adding eyebrows, though?

As I asked before, why not give them to all of the alien species? We could even remove them from humans. By your logic, it shouldn't upset anyone, seeing as it's such a minor detail.

In truth, it's a jarring change to the face of an iconic species in a game based upon face-to-face contact. It's also a bizarre logical departure from established lore.

As I said, I think it was a simple oversight that won't stand, and I'm not the least bit worried this will appear in-game. I'm just dropping in to offer some viewpoints. It seemed like the thread was leaning heavily in the "Yay eyebrows!" direction, and I couldn't have that without offering a few words of dissent. :)

That is not the problem. If the asari had been initially introduced with eyebrows, it would have been find. But they were given their own unique eyebrowless design, that's now being ruined by some doltish art designer that wants to glue hair on places where no hair should go.

Didn't Javik say asari once had hair until they started mating with lizards. Maybe mating with hairy apes brought the hair back.

Okey, wanted just be sure, I never know what things I might miss.  <_<

That is the reason that I try to avoid speculate, I would just start believing my own speculations

And I can understand that people don't like changes on species.

I prefer simple explanations, like:

"We couldn't design a face in Frostbyte without facial hair so Asari have eyebrows now."

No, just no. Too reasonable. If you´ll excuse me, I have to stockpile pitchforks and torches.

Reading through this thread, it clearly is the problem for many of the people here.

I actually really liked Sera the character. Personally I'd never be able to get along with her IRL, but she is a cool concept and I thought overall well done. Still, it's a concept that becomes really stale the second time around. There's nothing more to add to it than a retread.

I thought when Sera just up and killed that corrupt noble that was the highlight of the game, which sounds weird and violent to say but... I was harping on "wheres the rogue part?" before the game came out because it felt like everyone was too civil so I was glad some of that actually appeared in game.

There's no sense building these senseless reckless band of adventurers if they aren't going to take that way from time to time.

I'm assuming we're talking about the Asari in the "trailer"? If so, I would like to add that Asari also cannot be men.

It's also nice to have at least one character who isn't basically a pushover that does whatever the protagonist wants her or him to do. You can defuse the whole situation but Sera is her own person.

Bioware is making a mistake by giving the asari eyebrows. But it is an incredibly minor mistake.

Maybe the game will be about Humans who raise an Asari as gender neutral. The game will be about us policing her language and helping her find her true gender identity (as long as it isn't a cis male).

Something as simple as one character having eyebrows who *shouldn't* have eyebrows shows a deep inability to pay attention to the details on the part of the people who are presenting the story. It is a prime indicator of how trustworthy the storyteller is.

Three things:

1) Calling this change a DEEP inability to pay attention is excessive.

2) It's probably a conscious art design decision anyway.

3) Maybe this Asari is from Andromeda where they've evolved to have eyebrows.  Maybe the fashion trend during the original trilogy was for Asari to remove their eyebrows.  Maybe only purebloods have eyebrows.  In other words, even if it wasn't an art design decision, there may be justifications for the difference.
