And yet BioWare was criticized heavily for showing too much of their stakes early in the game marketing. Remember Corypheus's picture was leaked months before Inquisition came out? Remember how everyone and their brother pretty much guessed he was the Elder One or would play some significant role in the story?

The game isn't even out yet! How can you go all "where's the soul?" when you're judging it off a 2 minute trailer. Calm down!
You are talking about BSN. When has that ever been calm? Unless we talk about MP. Then we calmly discuss the aesthetics of the Quarian bum-bum.
But seriously gals/guys, if you wanna be butthurt, there are better and atleast for one of the participants, more satisfying ways.

MEA has a chance to build a soul of its own. It's hard to say whether or not the "soul of ME" as we know it exists because we still haven't really seen much of anything. It sure looks like ME on the surface. In terms of gameplay , thats changed pretty dramatically with every game so I don't expect that to be the same.

Man, I might be a cheap date, but I saw that nova and I was like "It's baaaaaaack!" and developed a big derpy smile.
My excitement levels aren't super high -- they seldom are until I actually have the game -- but I have positive expectations that I will enjoy this game immensely, and it will be a positive investment of time and currency.
I usually shoot for managed expectations, though. Get too depressed about how horrible something will be, and it turns out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy, since you go in expecting to hate it. Assume it's going to be THE CHOSEN ONE DESCENDED FROM THE HEAVENS ON A BEAM OF QUALITY, and you're going to be let down and probably hate it too. Relax, have fun, enjoy it and try not to smother the game in the weight of your expectations, positive or negative.
especially this far out, jeeze

You compared this marginal trailer we got to actually playing through ME2's opening and getting immersed. By that logic, wait until you play MEA's opening and if you don't get into it then, well there's trouble ![]()
Anyway, they didn't show enough to say much. Why do you think you can make a statement about the soul of the game from that.

If you listen to the video then I think you can see very clearly how I made that assessment.
THIS is what they released at E3 for Mass Effect 2.

I'd say the soul is the rich storytelling of all the different races we interact with, and the planets we find ourselves visiting. The soul, like in any science fiction work set in the outer stars, comes from the depth in which that universe is detailed. We fall in love with all of the different characters and locations. That is what I would call the soul of Mass Effect.
What this trailer offers is more of that. We are going to interact with new characters. We are going to visit new locations. I don't believe anything has happened to the soul of Mass Effect. I believe it is still going strong, and from everything we have seen, I think I'm believing in the right thing.

My theory:
I think they got really freaked out by the reaction to ME3 endings or DAI, and are now really really careful.

The video doesn't help with your assessment. Yes it's obvious people expected more depth and better footage and more atmosphere or focus on different things rather than a half-assed trailer like what we got. So do I and I was disappointed. But apparently they don't want us to know or see more at this time, there'll be reasons for that. How they marketed previous games is not necessarily an indicator of how they will market the next.
For you to assume lack of information and disappointment that it's not what you wanted to see = the soul of mass effect andromeda isn't there, is kinda jumping to your own conclusions.
You say it yourself: "Bioware and EA have not provided us the stakes yet to care about"
That does not mean that they don't exist. It means we haven't been presented with them if they do.

The "soul", as the creative basis for MEA is being called, is being pampered beyond comprehension. The MEA team wants this to be a great start and they're proving it by the constant worry on their end. Q1 2017 might be too soon yet, even if the game looks good, because they want to tweak the game ever so much to get the type of game players want. Regardless of the criticism of DAI, they did bring out a great enough game for people to clamour and hate at the same time and they're looking to do it again with MEA, no doubt.
Personally, i look forward to them spending just a little bit of extra time tweaking the game so a) it'll be an ME game to be proud of and b_) i'll hopefully have enough saved up for a new laptop. ![]()
